how exactly do i turn a dvd into an .avi or .mpg file? can any1 give me the name of specific program that will do this?

Depends on what you are converting the DVD for. Regardless the reasons, I think it is illegal to convert movies into something else.

oh it's because i jsut bought a new ipod video and i want to put my dvds on but i can only convert avi / mpg to mp4

Its technically illegal in many places, but the laws on the subject are so contradictory and confusing its not funny. We have a tutorial in the tutorial and guides forum to do what you want onto an ipod.

When you use your ipod please dont use the white earphones, you would be better wearing a jacket saying, FASHION VICTIM< STEAL ME.
