A friend and member here directed me to join this site and follow every step, which I did, and I have no spyware, no viruses, but still get that message above. I also still get this message upon bootup:
After Win XP Home splash screen: Blue Screen with: Cannot Open Volume for Direct Access.
It then takes 90 seconds on a black screen to get to the login screen, then another 75 seconds after clicking the login button to get to the desktop.
I've always run Ad-awareSE and Spybot S&D, and Norton Corp Ed. 24/7 w/auto updates. I have SP 1, not SP 2, as I've been recommended not to install SP 2 due to conflicts and slow-downs on the system (??) but all other Win XP updates have been installed.
I have not been able to run an Error Checking (file system recovery, bad sectors on disk) on my C drive - I get this message: disk check utility needs exclusive access to some windows files on the disk.
I have 4.5 gigs free on the C drive and 16 gigs free on the D drive, which is a partition of the C drive. I get the same error messages on the D drive.
I ran a system restore: I ran it twice, both from dates I know are earlier than any changes made.
Both times:
Finish restore.
Checking file system on Drive C. Type is NTFS
Cannot open Volume for direct access
Windows has finished ckg the disk. Restored to Dec 26. No changes made.
