As for Tompah on 29 Dec I get the same error message re svchost.exe "error the memory could not be written - message actually reads "the instruction at 0x009996bc referenced memory at 0x0000000, the memory could not be written" and this appears every time I want to search My Computer as well as every time on start up, and sometimes when I want to open Excel files.

I attach my start up list document as copied from the instructions on HiJackThis.
