What type of CD did you try to read? does it read basic music CD? If it does read music CD(not MP3......) then you need the program that wrote the CD intalled first. Most of CD drive today will read Original music CD in windows build in player unless you droped it from second floor to the ground. I got the feeling that you are trying to read one of those CDs that you wrote let say using inCD.
Your hardware is OK.Obviously it did work for you when you reinstall windows.

But when i insert a DVD, it will run as per normal...

This is what I want you to do...insert your windows xp disc in your dvd/cd combo drive, reboot, enter bios, set it to boot to cd/dvd as first device....

Does it give you a chance to start windows install....ie, do you see the message PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM CD
?

If so, we know the dvd/cd combo drive can READ CDs. If not, the drive is likely malfunctioning.

DVD/CD rom drives actually have TWO lasers. One can go out and the other can work, leaving you with a perplexing problem like this.

If it DOES read the XP cd, we know it is a windows problem

Hailbios...

Have you tried uninstalling the drive in Device Manager and letting Windows reinstall it automatically during a restart?
