USB Slowdown

i have a 5 year old Compaq Presario 1700 notebook computer....whenever I use my USB ports, there is a significant slowdown, and countless pauses.....I have to continuously click on touchpad just to get things moving, and whatever I type doesn't register until I click....This happens when I plug anything into the USB Port...my webcam and my external hardrive for example

does anybody have an answer? do I need some sort of a "booster"

How up to date are your MS patches? Your hardware is "old" and USB functions have changed in the last 5 years. If all of your patches are current, post your problem in the Hardware Forum.
