Wannabe1, I ran the first download and rebooted but how do
I know if it TOOK? I didn't have to do an 'install' so that makes me think it is not
quite downloaded???
I am not sure whether to go on to the next download or not.
Grrrrrr from flowergirl because I am NOT a computer Geek.
I just know the 'surface' about computers and mostly NOTHING
about their 'innards'.....

Sorry, Janie...I should have warned you that these apps appear to do nothing, but they do... Go ahead and finish up the instructions I gave you and let me know if you are able to reinstall the Norton.

Well, Wannabe1...I tried.
When I clicked on RUN and then put this in msiexec /unregister.
And then clicked on OK...a pop up came up that said
INCORRECT FUNCTION
Oh Well, I think my AVAST will do the job just fine.
Do you?

Actually, I think the Avast is a far better application than Norton. It uses less resourses, has the auto update, and it actually finds AND removes the bad guys. The only disadvantage is that you have to remember to run it.
Make sure your Windows Firewall is enabled...or download a different one. Sygate is good (although it has been purchased by Norton so I don't know how much longer it will be supported ), but there are others that are just as good.
Not being able to reregister the installer is bothersome. I wonder if the service has been stopped for some reason. To verify that the required Windows services are enabled:
Click Start and then Run type services.msc and click "Ok".
Locate the Windows Installer entry. If Windows Installer service is not started, right-click the Windows Installer entry, and then click "Start". Then double click on it again and choose "Automatic" from the drop down menu, "Apply" the change, and click "Ok".
Let me know what you find...

Hey Wannabe1.
It DID install...the icon was there this morning on my desktop.
When I clicked on INSTALL, a message said:
"The SYM Clean tool has detected no additional items
that need removed."
Sooooooo I put in my 2006 Norton Systems disc to re-install.
But this time a message came up that said:
"The programs listed are incompatable..uninstall
Avast!Antivirus"
But I am going to KEEP AVAST....I also think it works much better
than Norton on REMOVING those virus's....and I had NORTON installed
when I got those computer infections!!!
I have a question:
When you right click on the blue circle with the a (AVAST) and click on
program settings....what all should be checked there?
Mine does a scan at each re-start so that is working pretty good.
Thanks, Janie

Hi GEEKS...Well, my computer is AMOST good as new.
Just a few more problems. (I still don't have sound.)
A special thanks to Wannabe1 and Loophole for patiently teaching me
what all I needed to download and DO.
Here is my latest questions:
When AVAST found 7 infections, I moved them all to the Chest Box.
I deleted all of them but three.
Here is what they are:
A0253974.EXE C:\System Volume Information\_restore
A0253975.EXE C:\System Volume Information\_restore
A0253976.EXE C:\System Volume Information\_restore
What do I do with them?
Is that why I have no audio? (When I go to control panel it says
NO AUDIO DEVICE.
How do I get my sound back?
I think I can do it if someone gives me 'simplified' instructions.
And keep in mind, I can't get my computer to go into safe mode.
(It is probably ME, not my computer, that is GOOFY.
P.S. I am posting this on my malware thread also because I wasn't
sure where to put it!
THANKS
Janie

Hi Janie...
Download This Driver and save it to your desktop.
Go to the Device Manager (right click My Computer and select Properties, under the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager button) and click on "Sound, video and game controllers"...look for any yellow ! or ? If there are any related to AC ' 97, right click on it and choose "Uninstall". Accept the change and reboot.
Check the Device Manager again...Did the sound device reinstall automatically?

Let's hold off deleting those three files for the moment...unless Loophole advises you to go ahead and do it.
We can always get rid of them when I have you do the final steps I have in store for you...

Thanks for waiting around on me.
I have it downloaded but can't figure out how to get it on my desktop?
When I click on Open...it just shows a folder.
And when I click on All files downloaded to desktop,
it shows the ones that are there.
So what do I do next...it is in my bottom taskbar now.

A P.S. to the above note.
I went to the Device Manager.
There ARE two yellow thingies with
yellow question marks before them.
One says: other devices
And the other says: Multimedia Audio Control
I won't uninstall until you tell me how to save the
previous to my desktop...unless it is good enough
in my bottom taskbar?

This will be a compressed folder (zipped)...You'll need to right click on it and choose "Extract all"...then you'll be given the opportunity to choose where you want the files extracted to...select the desktop.
Go ahead and uninstall both of the devices that are marked with yellow question marks. Then...
Double click on the extracted folder on the desktop, find the file Setup.exe, and double click on it. This will begin the installation of the device drivers for your sound device. Once the installation is complete, reboot and you should have sound.
Let me know how this goes.

I was able to get it on my desktop now.
But I do not see anything like SetupExe.
There is Set up Launcher
Setup MLF
Viaudio
Windows setup....
Now what???
I wish I could copy and paste the list for you but it won't let me.
