But usually if you go to programs and right click on whatever you
want as a desktop icon....just click on 'create shortcut' and you
will get that icon on your desktop.
This is what I do to create shortcuts.
It may or may not be what you were asking.

Right click on your desktop background...click anywhere on it.
Then where it says
Arrange Icons by:
Scroll down and see if
Show desktop icons is checked???
I hope this helps.
It is 12:30am and I am going to bed.
But I will check here in the morning to see if this brought back your icon.
I think it will...I HOPE it will
P.S. I went to bed and got back up. I got to thinking maybe you
met your desktop icon you wanted to retrieve was NOT on your
desktop but in the top taskbar...was it?

What I was hoping for was for the little icon to come back to the task bar so that when I have 2 dozen windows open and need to get to the desktop it's not an ordeal...

Click Start, then Run and type regsvr32 /n /i:U shell32...click "Ok".
Does this return the Show Desktop icon to the Quick Launch bar?
