Hi, I am getting the usual Win Fixer popups telling me I should download WinFixer to scan my computer. I have read some of the otehr threads involving this topic, so I have a good idea of what I should do, but just in case I am wrong I am posting the log so a person with more expertise can have a look before I start messing with the computer:

Hi! Ok things didn't go totally smoothly, but mostly ok. When hijack this opened in safe mode one of the files that I was supposed to fix was not listed after the scan. (02 - BHO: MSEvents...) I closed hijack this with the intention of manually restarting it, but turns out that was not possible. I was not even able to retart the computer, all i had was a black screen with "safe mode" written in each corner. I had to pull the battery on the laptop and reboot

So when it rebooted, i let it go into normal mode. then i ran hijack this and the files were both there so i fixed them in normal mode. cleanup ran fine.

I ran active scan and it found 6 things. But it was not able to just delete or clean them without me downloading the trial version of the software, which i did, but when I went to install it, it wanted me to uninstall McAfee, which I have paid for, so I would rather not. McAfee, of course, does not locate the same unwanted files, it only locates vundofix. So here are the logs, I think the winfixer problem is fixed tho, which would be a great start!

* Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to.


* Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

* Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:


* Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.

• Put a tick by Standard File Kill.
• In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time:

• Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file.
• It will ask for confimation to delete the file.
• Click Yes.
• Continue with that procedure until you have pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.
• Killbox may tell you that one or more files do not exist.
• If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.
• Next in Killbox go to Tools > Delete Temp Files
• In the window that pops up, put a check by ALL the options there except these three:
  • XP Prefetch
  • Recent
  • History
• Now click the Delete Selected Temp Files button.
• Exit the Killbox.

* Restart back into Windows normally now.


* Run Kaspersky online virus scan here.

When given the option, choose the "Extended database" for the scan.

When the scan is finished, Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from Kaspersky scan

Check this out for info on how to tighten your security settings and some good free tools to help prevent this from happening again.

Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

great, that answers my next question, how to keep it from coming back since I thought firewall was supposed to be on that, but wow was I wrong.
