Currently running 98 would like to install Win XP Professional. Do I format HD and then install XP or can I install XP directly over 98 and format at same time?

Hi awsj...

If your XP installation CD is an Upgrade version, you can do an in-place installation or upgrade. If your CD is the full version, it is best to format and do a clean install. (You can do a clean install with an upgrade version, too, but not an upgrade with a full version... :tazz: ) The XP CD can format your HDD for you as part of the install.

I would recommend the clean install in either case...less chance of corruption or infection.
