hi,

first, thank you for providing this service.

i have read your pre-post requirements and followed as far as my system would allow. i am running xp2, with the following spy/vir programs: spybot, spware doctor, avg, a squared, adaware, trial version pc cillin. i have also run online scans with kapersky. my problems are as follows: most of my prevent and destroy programs will not run properly, i.e. do not finish. the ones that do find nothing wrong. i have noticed that there is 'unspypc' attempting to alter my registry at startup, also the entries 'yaemu.exe' and one other attempt the same but are blocked by spyware doctor each time, or so it tells me. my cpu is constantly jumping around. also, and i have no idea if this is relevant, when i go to windows task manager, performance tab, something strange seems to be going on with the memory under 'Physical Memory (K)' Total 753184, Available (here is curiosity...the number, which is currently 222756, has been steadily decreasing over the last few days), System Cache 391740 (also fluctuates but is not disappearing). i also have problems with link redirection in my ie browser. also, i cant seem to be able to boot in safe mode? so, all that kind of stuff is going on and i cant seem to find/remove whatever is causing the problems. any help/advice you could lend would be greatly appreciated. here is my HJT log:

Hi kcasmann

Welcome to G2G! :tazz:

** First you need to download the following tools and have them ready to run. Do not run any of them until instructed to do so:

* Click here to download Fixwareout.exe and save it to your desktop.

* Click Here and download Killbox and save it to your desktop.

* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

* Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to.

* Before you proceed with the following removal directions, you need to disable Spybot's Tea Timer as it will interfere with the changes we are trying to make.
  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
  • If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
  • On the left hand side, Click on Tools
  • Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
  • Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Run Fixwareout:
  • Doubleclick on the Fixwareout.exe file to run it.
  • Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin. Follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer, please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load, this is normal.
  • When your system reboots, follow the prompts that follow.
  • HijackThis should open automatically.
  • Click the Scan button, and put a check by the following entries:

Flrman1,

thank you very much for getting back to me. i began as you said, but halted to post this (from fixwareout) because there were no prompts to follow and this log showed up nearly instantaneously, so i wanted to make sure before proceeding. also, i did reboot after runing fixit but HJT did not appear. thank you again.

Check for missing files
.....
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AUTOEXEC.NT not there
.....
End check for missing files
.....
VXD Check
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers]
"VDD"=hex(7):00
.....
End vxd check
.....
please post this at the forum

also, in regards to your instructions, should i 'fix checked items' after checking them in HJT, or just exit? i assume i am to click the fix button, but i just want to make sure. this is my first go at such corrective procedures. thanks again.

Please do one of the following to fix the AUTOEXEC.NT not there error:

If you have XP pro download this:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/spencer.greys.../XPProfiles.exe

If it's XP Home download this:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/spencer.greys...XPHomeFiles.exe

These are self extracting zip archives so just doubleclick on the file and a WinZip wizard should appear. The default location should be set to unzip to C:\Windows\System32. Click "Unzip" to extract the files.

Proceed with the fix after correcying the error.

Yes, click Fix Checked in Hijack This after checking all those entries.

* Copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to.

* Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmqnd.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmqnd.exe

* Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Put a tick by Delete on Reboot.
  • In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following line:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmqnd.exe

  • Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle.
  • It will ask for confimation to delete the file on next reboot and ask you if you want to reboot now.
  • Click Yes and let the computer reboot.
  • If Killbox tells you the file doesn't exist or it gives an error, restart the computer manually.
* After it reboots, go here and do an online virus scan. Choose "Complete Scan" and select all drives to scan.

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it.

Post a new HiJackThis log and report back what the Housecall scan found.

* Also you have an old vulnerable version of Java installed. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs and uninstall any Java Runtime Environment entries that are there. You may have more than one because the Java updates do not remove the old ones. Those can still be exploited even when the newest is installed.

* Now go here and install the latest version of Java.

hello again. i cant thank you enough for all your help. things seem to be finally returning back towards normal. i ran the trend micro scan and it came up with 1 infection and 4 cookies. i selected delete and it appears to have done that, though i could not find a log to post/verify. the infection was ADW_SC.68092

also, while i was running the scan, a prompt from the trial pc cillin came up (which i have seen before) stating there was an infection at
C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-1653462319-357464061-2299825339-1005\Dc8.exe

i dont seem to have such a directory. just though you should know. i removed the java that i had and installed a new one from the link you provided, thank you. there also seems to be no more redirecting! programs that were once shaky are coming back to life. i have yet to try and run scan with avg, spybot, etc. but will once i get the green light. they were previously unresponsive.

hey,

everything seems fine :tazz: . i do still get an occasional popup from pc cillin telling me about 'ADW FINDSPA.exe' but everything else seems to be working as it should. thank you again for all your help. i will be making a donation, it will just take a few days as i have to wait for pay pal to do its registration/deposit thing so i can verify, etc. needless to say, i think my computer is cleaner than it ever has been.

thanks very much for your time and help
kevin

if anything else comes up that seems pertinent i will forward the information along :)

hey,

ADW_FINDSPA.A (this is the name in the log) has been showing up, according to the log, since we started this cleansing. it claims the file is located at

C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-1653462319-357464061-2299825339-1005\Dc8.exe

though i dont seem to have this directory on my computer, so i dont know whats going on. but, so far, everything seems great. i wouldnt suspect anything if the pop up didnt show up.

thanks again

kevin

* Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.
[list][*]Put a tick by Delete on Reboot.
[*]In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following line:

C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-1653462319-357464061-2299825339-1005\Dc8.exe

[*]Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle.
[*]It will ask for confimation to delete the file on next reboot and ask you if you want to reboot now.
[*]Click Yes and let the computer reboot.

The file in c:\System Volume Information\_restore is in System Restore. To clear that we will turn off System Restore to clear all old restore points.

Check this out for info on how to tighten your security settings and some good free tools to help prevent this from happening again.

Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.
