I have a Compaq desktop and a Dell laptop (with an inbuilt wireless card). I have a broadband modem that I have in the past connected through a Router (Belkin) to use the wireless on the laptop.

For the last 10-15 days, the setup has been inconsistent.

Scenario 1
I'm disconnected from the web. I attach the output from the broadband modem to the router Wan line. Connect another cable from lines 1-4 on the router and attach to desktop / laptop. Try to login to broadband (pppoe connection) but unable to connect. Stays stuck in Dialing and gives error 678.

Scenario 2
Tried plugging the cable from the modem into one of the lines 1-4 on the router. Able to log in to the net after signing in.

Scenario 3
Tried reversing the cable back to the Wan line on the router and this time it works!!

Scenario 4
Try the setup process for the wireless router. Switch off modem, router. Connect modem to router wan line. Connect router line 1-4 to computer. Router is not detected by the computer.

I think the last is similar to scenario 1 where for some reason, the connection does not go through.

I checked the cables and they look fine. Independently, they work fine for other purposes too. Is this some issue with my router?
