Hi Crazy Canuk,

You have a nasty About:Blank infection. This fix requires several tools that need to be downloaded. Please download these now, we will run them later.

1) About:Buster - Download it and extract it to C:/aboutbuster.
2) CleanUp! - Download it and install it.
3) CWShredder 2.11 - Download it and save it to your desktop.
4) Ad-Aware - Download, install, and update.

Enable hidden files and folders: http://www.bleepingc...torial=62#winme

During the fix do NOT connect to the internet. Unless you can memorize these instructions, it would be a good idea to print them out.

Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run AboutBuster
-Click Start to begin the process
-Click OK on the Buster Report dialogue box to start the scan
AboutBuster scans the computer for malicious files and deletes them.
Save the report (copy and paste into Notepad and save as a .txt file) to post a copy for review.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: ‘Fix’ button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run CleanUp
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run Ad-Aware
-Configure Ad-Aware for a full system scan
-Run it

Clean Up the left overs

Open Control Panel and go to Add/remove Programs.

Find Netpumper in the list and remove it.
Check if Forbes is also listed and remove it

Open Run HJT, close any open windows, and fix the following items (if they are still there):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\daysx.dll/sp.html#37049
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\daysx.dll/sp.html#37049
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\daysx.dll/sp.html#37049
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6FB05281-1270-811F-B588-F21D4D785521} - C:\WINDOWS\mfcxu32.dll
O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar2.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [cris32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\cris32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O8 - Extra context menu item: Download with NetPumper - C:\Program Files\NetPumper\AddUrl.htm
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab
O16 - DPF: {B942A249-D1E7-4C11-98AE-FCB76B08747F} (RealArcadeRdxIE Class) - http://games-dl.real...ArcadeRdxIE.cab
O16 - DPF: {EE2589EB-7FC8-44DB-A892-573F2C4B41E0} - http://pdf.forbes.co...oaderSigned.cab
O16 - DPF: {FF0C042C-98E9-4C36-B2EC-E21FDFDCEF75} - http://download.reds...rsinstaller.cab
O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\ntud32.exe

In Windows Explorer, find these files - if they are still there and delete them. Some of them may not be there.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cris32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mfcxu32.dll
C:\Program Files\ NetPumper - Delete the entire folder
C:\WINDOWS\ntud32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\daysx.dll
c:\Program Files\Forbes - Delete entire folder if present - it may not be.

Reboot into normal mode (simply restart your computer as you normally would), and run the following free, online virus scans:

http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp

Then restart your computer one more time and post a new HJT log as well as the About:Buster log I asked you to save earlier.

Hi Crazy Canuk

There's a newer variant of this infection that needs a slightly different approach.

Disable System Restore. Right Click the My Computer icon on your desktop and go to Properties > System Restore tab. Put a tick in the 'Disable system restore on all drives'. Apply. OK.

You might like to print these instructions before you start. Please make sure you read all the way through before you start.

Please download and install these programs. If you downloaded them previously these versions have been updated to handle this variant. You will need to update them or download them again. Don't run them yet!

Please download and unzip
About:Buster to a folder. Inside the folder is a readme file that has instructions on the use of the program.
AboutBuster MUST be updated before you use it.

Start AboutBuster, click the update button, check for update, drag the box to the side and hit download updates, close the box . Don't run it yet.

Please download and install AD-Aware.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Download and unzip cwsserviceremove to your desktop. use either link below:
http://computercops....ownload&id=3002
http://www.mytechsup...rviceremove.zip

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://cwshredder.ne.../CWShredder.exe

Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

As Windows XP, 'Search' will not automatically show hidden files even if your folder options settings are set to do that. Do this so you can see hidden files and folders - click here http://www.davehigha...ds/xphidden.zip to download xphidden.zip. Extract xphidden.reg from the zip file and save it to the desktop. When done, double-click the xphidden.reg and when asked to merge say yes.

Important Step
1. Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
Scroll down and find the service called:

Network Security Service (NSS)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows. If you don´t find this service listed go ahead with the next steps.

2. Reboot into SafeMode. <---MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO DO THIS!!

3. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for:

ntud32.exe
cris32.exe

If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process. Close Task Manager.

4. CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS Scan with Hijack This and put checks next to all the following, then click "Fix Checked"

Hi Crazy Canuk

HijackThis doesn't delete bad files - it removes them from startup - so you can take whatever further action is needed. The deletions listed at the end are for the removal of the bad files.

Have you followed all the instructions or just run HijackThis and the other software you downloaded.

You need to be in Safe Mode to do the deletions and all the things need to be done in the exact order they are written. Are you sure you are able to get into Safe Mode. This article may help.

http://service1.syma...001052409420406

Safe Mode loads only enough program to let Windows run - it is a repair mode.

You should see a black screen come up with some choices

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking

Choose Safe Mode - you don't need networking

You will then see a screnn which asks you which operating system you want to start - choose Windows XP

In Safe Mode - the colour is poor, the fonts and icons are large and ugly and Safe Mode is written in each corner.

Have you got that far?

Yes, I was in safe mode from the start, since it's the only way I could unzip some of those programs. I don't know what I did incorecctly, but I'll try it again.

Hi there

Start in Normal Mode. You should now have all the files you downloaded ready to go now. Some of the things you're asked to do must be from Normal Mode. Don't boot into Safe Mode until asked to.

Please run HijackThis again in Normal Mode and don't reboot after posting the log. The filenames can change which makes the last lot of instructions out of date.

I need to check that the files still have the same names. If they do not I'll have to revise the details a bit.

Hi crazy canuk

We'll try a slightly different way. At the moment you should be in Normal Mode.

Make sure System Restore is disabled. Right Click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and go to Properties. Go to the System Restore tab and make sure there is a tick in the 'Turn off system restore on all drives'. Apply. OK.

Please read through the instructions before you start. Print this out or copy/paste into Notepad, so its available to you when you don't have an internet explorer window open

You should already have all these programs - check my last detailed post for the links if you need them. This is the list of the software you should have.1. Start AboutBuster, click the update button, check for update, drag the box to the side and hit download updates, close the box . Don't run it yet.

2. Start Adaware and update it. Make sure your settings are still the same as the details here: http://russelltexas....e/adawarese.htm Close Adaware

3. CWSserviceremove should be on your desktop. Make sure it is there. If not download it and unzip it - Right click > extract all > the wizard screen will appear > click on 'browse' and select desktop > OK

4. Open CWShredder and Click on Update. If you haven't opened it before, the license agreement will come up first. Click on Agree. Then Click on Update.

5. Hoster - you should have this also - unzipped and ready to use later.

6. Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders". Click "Apply" then "OK"

7. Make sure you have installed this http://www.davehigha...ds/xphidden.zip so you can search for hidden files and folders. Unzip as before to Desktop. Double-Click xphidden.reg and click 'yes' when the merge screen comes up.
Go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit OK
Scroll down and find the service called.

Network Security Service

Make sure it is selected in color. Right click on the service and click on stop. Right click on it again and go to Properties. In the Properties screen and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled in the dropdown box. Click on Apply. Then OK. If the service isn't listed go ahead with the rest of these instructions anyway.

Open HijackThis and click on Open Misc Tools. Click on Open Process Manager. Find these processes in the list and click on 'Kill process' for each one. You can't select more than one at a time.

C:\WINDOWS\ntud32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cris32.exe

When you've found them and 'killed' them. Click on 'Back'. This will open the HijackThis Scan screen. Click on Scan. Check all the following items in HijackThis. When they are all checked Disconnect from the internet. Close all open windows especially internet explorer or browser windows, Yahoo, ICQ etc.. Click on 'Fix Checked'.

NOW Reboot into Safe Mode - you already know how to do this or check the link I have in the last detailed post. Choose Safe Mode No Networking.

Right Click on the taskbar and open task manager. Check that these files aren't running. If they are, select them and click on 'End Process'

ntud32.exe
cris32.exe

Open HijackThis and click on Do System Scan only. Check that all the entries above have gone. If they have not. Check them again and click 'Fix checked'.

Open Windows Explorer. Click on the + next to My Computer and click on C: Navigate to the Windows folder and then the Windows\System32 folder and delete the files listed below in the right hand pane. If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if there is a tick in the 'read only' box. Click on it to remove.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ fbjzo.dll - Delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ appvw32.dll - Delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ cris32.exe - Delete this file
C:\WINDOWS\ ntud32.exe - Delete this file

You may find files of the same name but with different extensions next to these files in the Windows Explorer windows. For example, if you found appvw32.dll and appvw32.dat or .exe listed together. Delete the others with the same name. Double check the name is exactly the same.

Double click on AboutBuster to run that. This will scan your computer for the bad files and delete them. Save the report. Copy and paste into notepad or wordpad and save as a .txt file. Post a copy of the log with your next here when you are done with all the steps.

Double click on the CWSserviceremove and when asked to merge say yes.

Double click on cwshredder. Click on the FIX button - let it run and fix what it finds.

Clean out temporary and TIF files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then click OK to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Open AdAware. Make sure that 'custom scanning options' is selected and click on 'Next'. Let it remove anything it finds in the 'Critical Objects' tab.

Reboot into normal mode.

Double click on Hoster. Click on 'Restore Original Hosts'. OK. Close program.

Do an on-line virus scan here: http://www.bitdefend...can/licence.php. Make sure you select 'AutoClean' and 'heuristics'. Save the log file. Reboot when the scan is finished.

Do a new HijackThis log and post it so we can check.

Hi Crazy Canuk

This keeps re-infecting with exactly the same infection.

I'm going to do some more researching and asking around on this one and see if I can find out why the accepted removal methods don't seem to be working for you.

I'll be back as soon as I can find out some more.

Hi Crazy Canuk

We'll try a different approach. If you have any questions about this please ask before you start the fix. Please read all the way through. Make sure that you still have all the software you downloaded. Print out the whole thing and do one thing at a time.

Boot into Safe Mode. Make sure you have "Safe Mode" written in each corner of the screen.

Open Windows Explorer and find these files and delete them.

C:\WINDOWS\ntud32.exe - file only
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cris32.exe - file only

When you have deleted the files. Close Windows Explorer.

Open HijackThis and click Do System Scan only. When the scan is finished check these items in the boxes next to these entries. Sometimes they aren't all there but check all the ones that are there. When you have a check mark against each entry, close any open windows and leave only HijackThis open. Click on Fix Checked.
