Just curious about past problem

About a year ago, my friend was playing games on my computer (XP Home Edition) and I told him to shut it down, but he accidentally hit standby. After that, the computer would not boot. It would get to the first screen and then shut off. Any idea why it did this? I had to get it fixed. I haven't used the standby mode since, and I hadn't before the incident.
