A couple of years ago I bought an off-the-shelf Compaq 4500 series desktop with 256 Meg RAM, Celeron CPU, and a HD of indeterminate size, but several gig (I don't remember). Not being a power user or a techie, this meets my needs with one exception--I like to play role playing games, and most of the new ones demand ar least 32 Meg video RAM. The Compaq video RAM is onboard the motherboard, and is only 8 meg.

I thought I had solved the problem when I went out and bought a PNY Verto 64 Meg GeForce MX 400 video cad. when I installed it I found out it apparently will not work with a Celeron CPU.

Other than my desire to play games (e.g., Lord of the Rings) this system suits me. Buying a new system is out of the question, and I don't have the expertise to install a new motherboard (wouldn't even know which one to buy, since Compaq is systems are so proprietary in nature).

Can someone help me? Is there a card out there, or another strategy that will allow me to increase the video RAM on this system? Or am I just screwed as far as gaming is concerned?

The card you tried to put in was probably an AGP card and your system didn't have an AGP slot to accept it. But don't worry, there's an alternative, PCI video cards. Here is a list of PCI video cards that WILL be compatible with your motherboard (just choose "PCI" under "Slot Type" on the left):
