Norton detected Download.Trojan, it is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstqq.dll.
I disabled system restore, started in safe mode, and scanned with Norton. It couldn't delete the file. I tried, still in safe mode (even restarting a second time in safe) to delete it manually, and it said that it couldn't delete because another program is using the file. But I was in safe mode and didn't know what program could be using it. I tried moveonb.msi that I found in a cnet forum entry, and that didn't work. I have spybot teatimer so I went into the system startup and found 2 entries for system.ini that have the name of sstqq.dll, but I uncheck them so they won't start, and as soon as I exit the teatimer and re-enter, they're back! I can't disable them on startup, can't remove them with the GiPo MoveOnBoot Utility. Here is my hijackthis log:

- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.


Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and tthe contents of C:\vundofix.txt into this topic.

Ok, first of all, I set a new restore point, but for future reference, please tell me why, when I first got this virus, the removal instructions from symantec told me to shut off system restore, if you're telling me now that this is the wrong thing to do... aren't there viruses that can only be removed by first disabling system restore, and how can I tell the difference in the future?

I ran the vundofix and this is the log:

Upon reboot, my Norton was no longer warning me about this virus, but the file is still present.

Then I tried, several times, to do the panda scan, but, the first 2 times, about 15 minutes or so into the scan, my computer rebooted and told me that it recovered from a serious error. Here is the log for the second time this happened, in local settings, temp, in a file called manifest:

The 3rd time I tried the panda scan, the computer froze and the only way to get out of it was to power down.

Just an update... On an hunch I decided to try to delete the sstqq.dll manually, and it told me that it cannot read from the source file or disk, and simultaneously, my Norton sent me a message that it deleted the virus. The file is no longer there. But I still have the unanswered question about why I can't complete the panda scan. I had tried a 4th time and got the reboot again with the "recovered from a serious error" message. I am posting another hijack this log, just so you can see if I did anything by clicking on the file and having Norton remove it this time.

Let me give you the logic of why System Restore should not be disabled.

First of all, what is system restore ?? System Restore is a backup facility whereby the system settings and the registry of the windows system is backed up on certain trigger events. Usually System Restore points are created at regular intervals of time and also when new programs / software are installed. Some of the registry cleaner softwares also create a systm restore point before they clean out the registry keys.

Lets assume that you start with an infected PC and disable the system restore and then proceed to clean it up of all infections. If something goes wrong (e.g. a wrong registry key if deleted etc.), you will have no way of doing a system restore.

Even if you manage to carry out the instructions properly, the infection may prove to be very stubborn and you may not be able to eradicate it. Your fallback option of doing a system restore and then deleting the "bad files" is no longer available to you.

Lets us assume that something does go wrong and you need to do a system restore. It is better to do a system restore to the an "infected" point rather than having to format your hard disk / reinstall Windows again, in which case you lose all the installed programs, software and data files !!!!!!!!!!!

So when should system restore points be cleaned out?? Some people believe that systm restore points should never be cleaned out (unless every system restore point available on the PC is infected). Quite a few people believe that once the PC is cleaned out, a new system restore point should be created all earlier ones should be flushed out. While it is possible to clear out specific systm restore points, it requires a lot of expertise in handling the Operating system at the very basic level to do that.

What happens if system restore points are not cleaned out ?? System restore points carry info and data about the infections which were present on the PC when the point was created. These infections could get activated, if you do a system restore to that specific point. Is you dont do system restore, they keep on lying dormant and wont effect your PC at all.

Finally, why does Norton recommend that you disable system restore right at the beginning ?? Norton is basically assuming that the user who is following the advanced instructions is an advanced user and can handle the fix even if there are deviations in implementing it. Even then I dont agree with them. Why disable it when you can clean up the points later!!!!!!!






Let us dig deeper and chek if there are any infections which are hiding.

I sort of understand what you are saying, but I thought that there are some viruses that you can't even attempt to remove if they are embedded in the restore folder... Symantec isn't the only place that tells you to turn off the system restore before scanning. I know TrendMicro does too... Oh, well, I will be sure to keep it on from now on.

I am not sure if the rootkitreveal log was saved or done correctly... I ran it again and came up with a 21MB txt file, which doesn't sound right and of course is too big to post here or attach. So let me know if you didn't get enough information from what I posted before.

That should take care of Pacimedia.

How is your PC behaving ?? Do you have any issues with your PC ??

If not then we will dispense with the rootkitrevealer log since it is so big !!! Else I will figure a different way of approaching the issue.

The computer has been misbehaving in the sense that, too many times, it has rebooted with that message about recovering from a serious error. There doesn't seem to be a pattern in the way it happens, either, I can be downloadiing something, or offline and just working a program, or just sitting there. That didn't happen before the removal of the vundo. Could that have been covering up a more serious problem?

Lets try running Vundofix file once again.


Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
• Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
• Turn your computer back on.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Yes, I just got it again today. It was starting to do a Trend Housecall scan at the time. I finally got it going and it didn't come up with anything new.
