Hi, I've run all the suggested programs and tools as directed before creating this post. In order, I've run:
1. CleanUp
2. Ad-aware SE
3. CWShredder
4. Spybot S&D
5. Ewido

I'm constantly getting tons of tmp files auto building in the temp folder under -> documents and settings -> "user" -> local settings -> Temp. The files are sequencial in number then alphanumeric preceeded by "ver" i.e. ver01.tmp, ver2d.tmp, ver2e.tmp. These are created along with two other files, qdiagd.log and currently PMShared but this latter one varies in it's discription after I delete them in safe mode. I've tried everything I can think of including disabling restore, but nothing works.

I don't find any malware in your log. Depending on the magnitude of the temp files being created, you may not have a malware issue at all. But let's do a little more digging and see what turns up.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan

• Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
• A new window will open...click the Check Now button
• Enter your Country
• Enter your State/Province
• Enter your e-mail address and click send
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report along with a new hijackthis log.

Thanks for getting back to me. I didn't think it would be that long on a response so I was inactive for a while. I posted another log as requested. One other thing, when I try to follow basic advice of resetting IE security defaults, tools -> internet option -> secirity -> internet zone, the level is set at medium but the custom level and default level are grayed out and not changeable. I suspect I may have set something in windows to do this but can't find how to open this to allow setting to default?

Have you run Panda yet?


Click Start -> Run and type REGEDIT
Navigate to the following locations:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Control Panel

In the right-pane, select the SecChangeSettings value and delete it.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software\ Policies \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Control Panel

Same thing here. In the right-pane, select the SecChangeSettings value and delete it.

Then, navigate to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Internet Settings

In the right-pane, select the Security_options_edit value and delete it.


Close Registry Editor.
Reboot and you should be able to change those settings.

I deleted all the files Panda listed however I still can't change my internet security setting. It's at medium but via control panel or from IE then internet options then security tab, the custom and default tabs are grayed out and not modifiable.

One other note: I first discovered this issue when I was walking past my computer and saw the cursor moving with nobody sitting at the computer. It was pinging an IP address.

Yes I'm using a firewall, Windows and McAfee. I was in regedit tracking down some safe edits and may have already deleted the two you mentioned because they are no longer in my HT log, however I still can't use the custom or default buttons on my internet zone within IE with it set on the current setting of "Medium." I can raise the setting to high security then the "default" button is available for use, but I can not set it below Medium and the "custom" button never becomes available regardless if I set it for medium or high. I was able to delete all the files in the temp folder of local settings with HT's shredder even though it wouldn't let me do this manually, however the tmp files continue to compile again, regardless of what I've cleaned thus far. Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.


Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

The application finds both bad files and legitimate ones such as "wbemtest.exe", so don't choose the rename option yet! Copy and paste the log it generated in your next reply.
