Hi - I became infected while installing my new ipod. I discovered I was infected the next time I went to ie after installing. ie now redirects me from my homepage to c:\windows\blank.htm which is some crappy search page that says "Search engine - Just find it!" on the top of the window. I also get pop-ups like crazy, but most are shot down immediately by Norton. I tried to delete the blank.htm file, but it keeps reappearing. Upon some further investigation I went to add/remove programs to see if I had any new unwanted programs. I now have something called "Best Search Engine" I uninstalled it, but it reappears upon restart. When I restart I get a dialog box that says "Anti Virus Report : Is your computer infect with spyware?"

Please create a new folder in your C:\ Drive, Name the folder like this C:\HJT , Now place hijackthis into the new folder.

You have a nasty About:Blank infection. This fix requires several tools that need to be downloaded. Please download these now, we will run them later.

1) About:Buster - Download it and extract it to C:/aboutbuster.
2) CleanUp! - Download it and install it.
3) CWShredder 2.11 - Download it and save it to your desktop.
4) Ad-Aware - Download, install, and update.

During the fix do NOT connect to the internet. Unless you can memorize these instructions, it would be a good idea to print them out.

Boot into safe mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Run AboutBuster
-Click Start to begin the process
-Click OK on the Buster Report dialogue box to start the scan
AboutBuster scans the computer for malicious files and deletes them.
Save the report (copy and paste into Notepad and save as a .txt file) to post a copy for review.

Run CWShredder
-Next, click on the: ‘Fix’ button
-Follow the prompts, and press OK

Run CleanUp
-Make sure it is on Standard Mode
-Click the "CleanUp!" button

Run Ad-Aware
-Configure Ad-Aware for a full system scan
-Run it

Clean Up the left overs

Run HJT, close any open windows, and fix the following items (if they are still there):

Thanks for the help - I performed all of the steps that you recommended. I did run into some problems however.

After performing all of those tasks I rebooted in normal mode to run the free virus scans. Upon restart, none of the problems came up upon startup, looking good. But then when I tried to run those scans the housecall one wouldn't do anything so I tried the pandasoftware one. While trying that one it needed to download some stuff but couldn't connect. It suggested that I try again, it still didn't work so it said that I should reboot and try again. So I did (maybe I shouldn't have). Upon reboot the about crap and the bogus anti-vurus report pop-up were back. I also ran a total scan of my computer last night on Norton. It came up with dload.exe and opr00307.htm as being virus'. Norton could not delete the dload.exe.

After rebooting again after the failed attempt at the pandasoftware free virus scan I couldn't connect - I panicked - but discovered after a phone call that Comcast was changing the local service where I live and that is probably why the free online scans wouldn't work, so I may be back to where I started.

Below is my new hijack this log from this morning right after performing the tasks. Sorry for the long note, but wanted to make sure you had all of the information. Below that log I have attached another one that is after i had to reboot.

I did the things you asked. The hijack this log is below.

Also, upon restarting I got multiple Norton warnings. They are...

1. mszx23.exe is attempting to listen for connections from other computers
2. mszx23.exe is attempting to connect to a DNS server
3. tmpC.tmp is attempting to connect to a DNS server
4. Virus detected : c:\windows\system32\tmpf02.exe

Oh boy. what have i gotten into?

I ran the pserv-2.3.exe and couldn't find the snim.dll file anywhere. Also, I tried to save the report from the software to my clipboard to attach it with this message and it wouldn't do it. So i saved it as xml. when i opened that xml file the "are you infect with a virus" pop-up came up.

what should i do next?

I did the killbox program.

upon restart I got an error message: The application or dll c:\windows\system32\snim.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

then when i opened my opera web browser i got the nortor virus warning for tmpf02.exe again.

ok - I did the last tasks and below is my new hijack this log. how does it look.

I thought everything was doing well, but now i am getting bombarded with norton internet security warnings. The tmpf02.exe virus is still showing up and norton is saying that access to the file was denied.

also i am getting a medium risk warning from winlogon.exe. it asked me several times if i should allow windows logon to access the internet, i just did the recommended choices, which was to allow. now i am getting a medium risk wanign that winlogon.exe is attempting to access the internet. not sure what these are.

i just did some research on this winlogon.exe that keeps popping up. It sounds like it might be bad. I searched my c drive for the file and I found it in 5 locations One was in c:\I386 folder, one was in c:\windows\system32 and the other 3 were in a folder c:\windows\softwaredistribution. I am assuming that at least those last 3 and the folder are bad. What should I do about this? This seems to be getting worse!

All of this from an ipod installation. I thought Apple stuff was invincible.

Thanks for the continued help - sorry for the delay, but i was at work. i did everything you asked, but i was unable to delete the mszx23.exe file manually. it said i could not delete because it was being used and then it locked me up in safe mode, so i had to reboot. i did use the killbox on it. below is my new hijack this.

now when i reboot i get a rundll error - "error loading snim.dll - the specified module could not be found"

also - what should i do about the winlogon files in the c:\windows\softwaredistribution folder? i don't even know what that folder is - i assume it is all malware.

and i have something called "best search engine" under me add/remove programs list - i have tried to remove it, but it reappears upon reboot.
