Sorry about the delay getting back to you, USMCSniper...My ISP suffered a little vandalism last night...seems some young people were running around town shooting cell phone tower antennas with pellet guns and managed to take out a few of my ISP's antennas while doing it...looks like they got the problem fixed this morning....

We've been all over this dvd drive problem. I can't think of anything else to do with it. I would be interested in knowing if the two drives an the machine are connected to the same IDE ribbon. I could understand one drive going bad, but to have one go bad and the other not even show up in the Everest report is odd... :tazz:

The next logical step to me is to try a known good drive in place of the buggy dvd drive and see if it works as advertised after it is installed in the machine. If both your optical drives are on the same ribbon, let me know and maybe we can change their positions and see if that second drive will lite up and work properly...in short, at this point, I'm leaning towards a bad device.

I've also been watching the Malware team as they work with a new rootkit varient in the staff area of the forums. I appears that this varient does use device hooks, but as to what all it does to a machine or how it does it is, as yet, unclear. I'll be keeping an eye on that...

Let me know how you'd like to proceed.... :)

Well, it did cross my mind that something must be going on with th hardware, since we went after every software issue. Odd thing is the DVD-ROM does play music cd's. I suppose that it could be plugged into the wrong thing under the hood. The CD-RW drive is the original that came with the tower I bought in 10-03. The DVD-ROM drive was replaced in 2005, by a CompUSA onsite tech deal. He did put it in sorta fast to me anyways, but b4 he left he just said put in a CD make sure it works ( I put in a music CD).I purchased a 3 year extended warranty when I bought this tower. So far the HHD, power supply, video card, and the DVD-ROM drive was replaced. I have had the side panel off b4, it's easy, knowing what to look for now thats a different thing. I'm sure I can do it, as long as you are my point man. Been looking as new dvd-rom/Cd-rw drives, they ar enot that costly. Lets give it a look under the hood...........................SEMPER FI

Guys, don't mean to jump your thread but, I am having a somewhat similar problem. Windows recognizes both my CDRW and my DVD player. However, when I put a CD in I cannot access the drive and the CD Icon next to the mouse pointer flashes constantly while a CD is inserted (like it is trying to access but can't) As soon as I try to access the CD, it goes into a loop ( I guess) and freaks MY COMPUTER into Not Responding. Is this a DLA problem? Any Help? THANKS!

Oh....I did a Non-Destructive System Recovery and no change.
