R clk on file in My Doc, the DVD drive is there now, it copies to the HDD, in Taskbar message pops up " You have files waiting to be written to the CD". Click on it, then comes a message that says, " insert CD into the drive". I do, nothing happens, even with new media.

Do you click on the link to "Write these files to cd"? Or do you not even get the window to do that. Should be a large window with the link in the left pane.
Have you ripped any Sony/BMG music cd's on your machine recently?
Please Click on the link in my signature RootkitRevealer (far right) and scan your machine. Let me know if it finds anything..
Something is changing the Drive Type value in the registry...we just need to figure out what's doing it...

After clicking on the Taskbar "You have files waiting to be written to the CD". Next window opens with looks like a folder with the files waiting to be written. Click on "File" in the top left hand of screen, go down to " Write these files to CD" Another box open with the date in it, click ok or next, then I get a window that says "Insert CD into the drive" which I already had done. At that point it seems like the drive cannot "see" the CD inside of it. I will do the Rootkit thing and get back..........

No...those are ok. That's Norton's Rootkit...
Do you have SP2 on disk or is it a download? Is there an option to remove it in Add or Remove Programs?
Seems like you said the drives got flakey about the time you installed SP2.

Yes, SP2 shows in Add/Remove Progams as able to remove. Actually, my system/programs are running fine, I just have not tried to copy files to CD's since I installed SP2. I thought that SP2 might have something to do with it.

Is it possible that the Hardware itself could be at fault? Maybe the "recording part" of the drive is FUBAR.........
