never made it to getting the hijak log. I somehow overlooked that post. unfortunatly im not at that computer and may not be back on it for a day or 2

first I tried w the disk from verison. then I downloaded it from microsoft - same error both times

even in safemode saying cant install all components close programs and try again

Boot up with the XP CD in the drive and let Setup run. Go past the "C" and "R" repair options by presssing Enter just as if you're doing a clean install and you'll eventually get an option to "Repair an existing installation". That's the one you want. If it asks about formatting you've gone wrong, so start over.

You'll get to keep your existing apps & settings, but you need to re-install SP2, Windows Updates & any unsigned drivers afterwards. NOTE: Be aware that you'll lose any protection from Blaster / Sasser type worms. Don't go online without a firewall, whether the built in Windows one or 3rd party.

actually last night I went into the C:windows file that does a reinstall over itself. that seems to have fixed it. now i will update to XP before installing verizon

thanks for your help. Hope i dont need it anymore.

hehe good idea to rid yourself of ME...just as a sugestion..i would back up all of your important stuff off of the machien before upgrading...just to be safe

everything is working except i still cant upgrade to ie6. It halts and says other apps may need to be closed. (but none are running).
