I cannot give you a valued and expert reply on Zone Alarm Antivirus, as I have not tried it.
I can tell you that Avast is a comparable AV program and in some ways superior to McAfee and Norton Antivirus (partitcularly when it comes to utilizing system resources--it is less resource hungry than the two above).
Avast is updated reguarly, often daily, offers realtime protection, and scans emails. Another free AV program is AVG. I vascilate back and forth between the two depending on the month, but can recommend them both.
If you are interested in purchasing a AV package, I would recommend either Kapersky or Nod-32, both excellent packages and slightly better than the two aforementioned free ones
