Ok I have a 3 computer home network. Computer 1,2, and 3 are all connected to a switch. the Switch is connected to my netgear router and my dsl modem is plugged into the router. Everything(printer, file, and internet sharing) was working fine on all three computers until yesterday. So here is what is wrong.
so here is the problem
Computer 1 can ping computer 3, but not computer 2
Computer 2 can ping both computers 1 and 3
Computer 3 can ping computer 1, but not computer 2

I tried to configure my network manually, but I couldn't get the internet to work. If I can figure that out I would like to try it again. Anyway I went back and selected obtaine ip address automatically(thats how I had it before my problem) on all 3 computers and ran the newtwork setup wizard on all 3 computers. But I still have the same problem.

Thanks in advance for your help! :tazz:

Hi Andybikecrazy,
If you have a router, and only three computers, then why do you also have a switch?

Basic Checklist for Networking
1. Ensure that all firewalls are disabled for all computers involved.
2. Ensure that all computers on the network are in the same workgroup.
3. Ensure each computer has File and Printer Sharing installed.
4. Ensure that you have File Sharing enabled - to do this, right-click on any Drive or Folder on one (or all) of the other computers, and select Sharing and Security.... Ensure that Share this folder on the Network is enabled.

From your post, it looks like computer 2 is the problematic computer. Does it have a firewall? If you remove computer 2 from the network, can 1 and 3 interact with each other?

Is you Internet connection no longer working?

1. I just disabled my firewall on all 3 computers and its still the same.
2. All 3 computers on are the same work grouple because I ran the wizard and set the workgroup to MSHOME.
3. I am pretty sure all 3 computers have file and print sharing installed because it used to work and I never uninstalled anything.
4. Yes I have folders on all 3 computers that are shared.

Computer 2 does have a filewall, but I disabled it.
And yes i just dissconnected computer 2 from my hub and computer 1 and 3 can still communicate.

No my dsl internet is working fine. I just couldn't get it to work when i tried manually configuring ip, subnet and gateway ip on all the computers. I wasn't exactly sure what the default gateway was(router or dsl modem) and the prefered DNS server address.

Can you just clear something up for me:
When computer 2 is on the network, 1 and 3 are still able to share files with each other, right? The only problem you're having is that computer 2 can't share files with 1 and 3?

correct.

although when computer 2 is connected, it can view files on 1 and 3. however, when on computer 1 or 3, the files on computer 2 cannot be viewed.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up :tazz:

First of all, on Computer 2, please share the whole drive, D:\ -- this is for testing purposes.
Now, on C2 (<--- Computer 2 :) ), please do the following:
Please goto Start --> Run --> Type CMD and press OK --> Now, please type the following command:
cacls D:\ /g everyone:f -- NOTE: There is a space between the \ and / along with a space between the g and everyone -- there is no space between the everyone, : and f

Now, try to access files on C2 from C1 or C3 -- does it work?

And you're sure your firewall is disabled?

What firewall is it?

Try restarting C2 in Safe Mode with Networking, and then sharing files.

And you're sure your firewall is disabled?

positively sure.

Computer 2 has8e6home firewall.

I started computer 2 in safe mode and I was able to access the files on computer 2 rom C1 and C3. So that means some driver/application that is running is causing my problem. I am going to mess with it some more and try to figure out what it is.

So that means some driver/application

I'd be more inclined to say that it is an application.

Please download HijackThis. Run it and perform a scan -- save the log and then post the log.

Please also generate an uninstall list --
To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
  • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
  • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
  • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

I can see a number of infections on your computer -- before continuing, I would highly recommend cleaning these up, to ensure that they are not interfering with troubleshooting. Please follow all of the steps located here. Once done, you may also need to post a HJT log here.

Ok I ran the following on C2

Adaware
SpybotS&D
Trendmicro anti spyware
Trend micro house call
and made sure C2 has the latest windows updates which it does.

But my network problem remains the same.

I ran hijack this again and I posted log for C2 here

First of all, please disable your Software firewall and also remove it (temporarily) from the Startup List --
Goto Start --> Run --> Type: msconfig --> Press OK --> Now click on the Startup tab --> Please uncheck your Software firewall.

Now, click on the Services tab and scroll down to Internet Connection Firewall --> Right click on it and select Properties --> click the Stop button, and from the the startup type dropdown menu select Disabled.

Restart the computer, and then try to share files -- are you now able to?

If not, re-add your Software firewall to the Startup list by simply re-checking it, you can also re-enable the Windows Firewall if you wish.

removing it from startup didn't work... it still loaded on startup. So I just temporarily uninstalled it. I still can't ping C2 or view files on C2 from either C1 or C3. I even ran the windows network wizard again and still no success. So now that I know its not my firewall, what else could it be? :tazz:
