I'm running XP on this comuter and whenever I put a CD in the CD drive, it doesn't boot. Run won't work either.

When I open up my computer (since this is a hewlet packard) there are two drives, C, and D (D is recorver, it's HPs built in system restore)

I bought a new Disk drive thinking it might be a problem with the drive itself or the driver, but me being an idiot didn't realize you can't install the disk driver without an existing CD drive to instal with. Also, the driver isn't available online.

Please help. The only thing I can think of doing is a system restore.

I just pluged it in, there was no way to install the driver so I took it out and put the old one back in.

you don't have to install drivers for cd-rom drives...they come prepackaged with windows....

could you describe exactly how you plugged it in?
did you put it on the same IDE cable as your hard drive?
did you put it on the other ide cable? what connector on that cable?
did you hook the power up correctly?
did you plug the IDE cable in backwards?
is the drive jumpered as master, slave, or cable select?

I plugged it in exactly as the directions said. Wich was the same way my old cd drive was hooked up

No it's not on the same IDE as my hard drive

I plugged it into the master

The power was fine, I could open and close the tray

the IDE cable was plugged in fine.

it was plugged for master.

I doubt it's the way I physically installed it, because the old drive used to work fine but randomly stopped one day without messing with any of the cables.
