Trouble Selecting things on the Desktop

I can't use shift to highlight things on my desktop, is there a way to change this?

In windows XP this is normal. When you shift click or use the down arrow it selects things from left to right and then down. Can't remember if it was that way on ME or 98 but it is the default on XP. Not sure if it can be changed sorry :/
