I changed the domain to a workgroup i needed at home to do some file transfer and then after rebooting i get the error message :

system could not log you on. make sure your username and domain are correct then type your password again.

any ideas on how to go about this.

hit the option button to exapnd the menu, then click LOG IN ON THIS MACHINE (rather than domain)

Be forewarned, if your IT department set a system password (not the same as your domain password), you will not be able to log on to the machine.
