i have two newer computers, and an older one (3.5 years) and i need to get them hooked together. the two new ones can acess eachother and both can 'see' the older one, but neither can acess it. The older one cannot see the other two and won't even display the list of connections. I also want to get my new printer working, but that is secondary. I tried firewalls and re-booting lots, and re-installing the 'netsetup' wizzard. nothing worked. just the same error every time: "Mshome is not accessable. You might not ahve permission, yada yada. contact administrator if you have problems. the list of servers for the workplace is currently unavailible."

more details upon request.
thanks,
special K

Hi aerostarlegacy,

Have you tried restarting all three of the computers into Safe Mode with Networking, and then trying to share files? This will ensure that there is no software getting in the way.

On the 'older' machine -- for troubleshooting purposes, please share the whole drive D:\ -- or, share any other folder, and in the below command, replace D:\ with the path to the shared folder.
Please goto Start --> Run --> Type CMD and press OK --> Now, please type the following:
cacls D:\ /g everyone:f -- NOTE: There is a space between the \ and / along with a space between the g and everyone -- there is no space between the everyone, : and f

Once done, try to access the older computer from the newer computers. Any luck?

If not, can you ping the older computers from the newer computers?
Open up Command Prompt (Start, Run, type CMD) and type: PING Older_Computer's_IP -- to find out it's IP Address, goto Start, run, type cmd, press ok, and then type ipconfig -- now look for IP Address.

I restarted my older computer in safe mode, searched for the other computers by right-clicking on 'my network places' and typing in their names. I found them, clicked and drug them into the 'network places' thing, and got on each of the other computers and did the same to find the 'older' one, and it worked. I could access all of my music and reports and junk. (I could also transfer files) You may have noticed that I am typing in the past tense. Here is why: I rebooted in normal mode and it doesn't work anymore. I can still 'see' the 'old' computer from the newer ones, but the error still comes up as:
"\\desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The network path was not found."

when I followed your directions (very specific by the way, thanks) I got this error when I tried to acces it from the newer computers: "\\desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The network path was not found."

I went back into safe mode, and I could again access as I could before.

I tired to do the ping thing, and it didn't work. 'operation timed out'.

I suppose I could go into safe mode whenever I need to transfer files, but I'd rather not.

More help please?
Thanks,
Aerostarlegacy

Hi aerostarlegacy,
The fact that you can connect to your computer in Safe Mode would suggest that it is some form of software (ie: a Firewall) interfering with your connection.

Please download HijackThis. Run it and perform a scan -- save and post the log on your next reply. Please also generate an Uninstall List --
To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
 • Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
 • Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
 • Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
 • Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

hey special K,

Be sure to check the personal firewall settings in Norton Internet security. If its on, I"d suggest turning it off. It has cuased me all sorts of trouble, back when I had dial-up (remember those dark days?) and even after I got DSL. After I disabled the firewall, it worked fine. I'd turn off the windows one too. Your router should have a firewall built in. most do. Hope you get this all working. Say hi to you family for me.

I'll try that.
Thanks Erik.
would the dsl modem thing have a firewall, or just the router? It seems like an unwise idea to turn off the firewall. but what does a newbie like me know, huh?
Anyway, I'll try that when I get off school.
thanks,
kevdog

Hey Kevin,

I don't think the DSL modem has a firewall, however I'm pretty sure the router would, and that's what counts. that's where all the computers connect to. Hope it works.
