Hi-

I defrag my C drive, and it gets about 15% done and it tells me its done...I then analyze the drive right after, and it says I should defrag again..So, essentially I dont seem to be able to defrag my C drive.

One thing that could be interesting you should know---

Ive had 1.5 gigs left on this drive for a long time, and for months Ive been moving things from my C to my D drive to free up space--of course I had cleaned out the recycle and all those things to free space. Anyways, I downloaded the new Itunes the other day---the new version on my d drive (the old version was on my C)---and Im thinking it must have popped the old versions into the recycle bin when I put the new one on D..anyways, I emptied my recycle and now i have 6 gigs free..i assure you I was stunned..I empty my recycle at least a few times a week, so i have no idea what else this space could have been from but other than moving the new version to the D drive, because the old ones were on C.

anyways, i do have 6 gigs left which is 40% free on that drive--enough for defrag to work right.

yeah that should be enough space...

(some will disagree but,) windows defrag tends to not like other processes running when it's doing it's do....so make sure the screen saver is off also any virus scanners spyware scanners, anything over there in the system tray that you can exit without causing issues...basically anything that may be accessing the drive...then do the defrag...any better?

http://www.vcsoftwar...SpeeDefrag.html

try using speed defrag utility...it really is only the command line for defrag.exe, but it will shut windows down and run defrag on reboot...see if it finishes that way.

Also, did you run a chkdsk scan first?

Always a good idea.

start > run
cmd
<enter>
chkdsk /f
<enter>
say yes to chkdsk on reboot,

reboot

Okay--
read both your posts and tried both

I tried running speed defrag twice...both times it does the analysis report, a couple minutes later it quickly shows a defrag report, and then it powers down..I then went into disk defrag when I booted up and it still says I need a defrag (both times)

So, I disabled everything I tried to run MY defrag again--it gets 3% into it and then says its done and that it couldnt defrag certain items--I asked to see that report,,and here it is..thoughts?

did you run chkdsk ?

Now, temprarily turn of system restore

right click MY COMPUTER, choose PROPERTIES< choose SYSTEM RESTORE, check the box to stop monitoring drives. This will clear system restore points.

run speed defrag again

on reboot, turn system restore back on

The only box I see says "turn off system restore on all drives"--is that what you want me to check?

yes, I should have said--i ran chkdisk..i dont know if it found any problems, because it didnt say or not--it ran, then rebooted--I assume that is normal?

hi--I tried and while Speeddefrag seemed to be going much longer than before so I thought maybe it worked, when I finally brought my desktop back up, i checked to see if I need a defrag and my comp still says that I do...So--no go..thoughts?

anyways, I put back on system restore--does that mean I have lost all my old system restore points?

Thanks,
Jon B.

how do I know if its getting more done? The screen runs an analysis , and then sits on the dos screen until it shuts down--there was never any progress bar or anything..should there be?

Thanks,
Jon B.

I wouldn't bother watching it, however, it shows the analysis then shows a flashing line underneath then shows the completed report then shuts the PC off

You can leave system restore on
