The Dell Dimension E-310 Base System (the one on the far right) is what I want to get. I'm going to get some upgrades i.e the 1gb ram... But what I am wondering is this. I noticed it does not offer me a chance to upgrade the video card as a selection. What I planned on doing was simply taking out my current video card 128 MB ATI Radeon 9600 Series AGP and putting it in that one. But if I can't do that I won't buy the computer. Thank you for your help.

Ok here's what I want. A good video card, at least 2.5ghz processor, 1 GB memory, a 15-17" flat panel monitor, keyboard, mouse, operating system, (question, if I have a windows XP disc already can't I just use that?), basically everything I need in a computer. Problem is I don't know how to install a motherboard, nor do I know how to put it all together. I think I need a pre-built system. But tell me what you think. The one on Dell, I can get a 17" digital flat panel and all of those qualifications that I just listed (besides the video card) for 774$ after tax and after shipping. So it seems like a good option at this point.

Well there is prebuilt and there is prebuilt. dell truly are quite bad unless you are going for the cheaper than dirt range then they are ok, everything else isnt worth the PCB its printed on.

Also switching your old video card is a bad idea, you ideally want a new one so you can get a new motherboard with PCI-E as AGP is the old interface and is for all intents and purposes dead which means that you would essentially have to buy a new PC to upgrade the gfx card to something new.

There are other companies that make prebuilt and custom built computers that are better than dell, ill let one of the US guys explain that stuff there is less choice over there than there is in the UK and Europe for custom builds.

For prebuilt, you pay a bit of a premium, but in that Dell you can't use your old video card anyways.

That is PREBUILT much better than Dell. I can downgrade the motherboard, take away speakers, lower the warranty, and downgrade the Hard Drive. That would make it $208 cheaper bringing it past that. You wouldn't be $772. Not bad.

Keep in mind, it is prebuilt, faster than the dell, doesn't come junked up with random programs, has bigger harddrive and all. If you take it down a bit, it is still faster than Dell's .

Also you cannot use that video card with the E310, but this one (even on downgraded) has PCI-E so you can upgrade to a good video card on the newer slot.

But if I have XP OS do I need to buy another one? Or can I just use the disc I got right now? That would take away 100$ Bringing it down to my original price. And that doesn't even include a video card... There's no way I can afford that.

That's fine m8. But the 9550 is very old now. It won't handle newer games well. Also, AGP is a dead technology. You can't upgrade much. Socket 939 is AMD's new socket also. I also think 60 GB HDD is very small, but your choice.

MM... But my question about the whole operating system hasn't been answered. I looked it up on Google to no avail... Anyone else got some configurations that fit into my 800$ budget?

about the OS
i had 2computers 1 which i built (XP Home) and 1 which was old(XP Pro(Burnt copy)). the old 1 i wanted to give away so i formatted the hard drive and reloaded XP Home onto it, which was already installed on my new computer it worked fine, so i think you probably could use the same disc

Thats as good as you can do without getting crappy parts. Now if you knew how to put together your own pc you could get a pc at your budget with a monitor included.


You should be able to find an old used crt monitor from someone for $20.....
