Hard disk error

hi all,
i kept my computer down.to attach cd writer.
when i was trying to put down , there was some sound started to come from the hard disk.
when i tried to start the computer.
it is showing "PRIMARY MASTER HARD DISK ERROR" . what is the problem .
there is no problem with the jumper setting. it is detecting like this,
primary master: IDE Hard DIsk
primary slave:none
secondary master:cd rom(rom)
secondary slave: cd rom(writer)

Sounds like maybe the hard drive went bad. When they make an unusual sound that is never good.

can you start in safe mode? or for that matter can you get into any itteration of windows?
