Recently I upgraded to Windows XP (from ME).
For years, I've used Works 3.0 - especially spreadsheet - because it allows users to design our own keystroke macros, a feature which later versions and Excel do not have.

Since upgrading to XP, I can't seem to run Works 3.0 in a window. In fact, XP doesn't seem to recognize Wks 3.0 as a program at all - it doesn't appear on the Install/Uninstall list, even after I installed a new copy (in a separate file) after upgrading to XP. Opening the app properties box and checking "Run in normal window" doesn't seem to make a difference. Neither does it help to check "Run compatible with Win95, or Win98, or WinME. Works 3.0 does run, but it fills the whole screen, looks funny, and because it's not in a window, it doesn't allow flipping to any other XP activity.

Any ideas or help, anyone?\

what you have to do is find the program on the computer

work3\excel.exe for example

1. right click on the program.
2. click on properties
3. look for a tab that says "Compatibility"
4. where it says compadibilty mode, check the box and select "Windows 98/Windows Me"
5. Click accept
6. Run the program

ps. you may have to shut the program down first using "alt+control+del" before it will let you do it

hope it works

Works 3 won't appear in the Add/Remove section because it was written at a time when Add/Remove programs didn't exist. In fact it wouldn't exist until Windows 95 came out.

You might have issues with Works 3 ongoing now you're on XP because it was only designed for the operating system of the time (Windows 3.11) and the fact that it works at all on XP is pretty cool but its a solution you should consider moving away from because there's now next to no support for it from Microsoft.

Does OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org) not support Keystroke Macros?
