I have gotten rid of most of a virus on my computer. The virus itself is gone so I am not posting this in the malware area.

The main problem I have is the Run is missing from the start menu and from ctrl+alt+del, and in the corner with the date and time I have a few ? marks that I can not get rid of (it comes after the accurate date).

Note: Normally I would be able to fix the start-run in the registry. But after I go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\

It is missing the Explorer where the start-run settings are stored (all I have is active desk, nonenum, ratings and system)


(Windows 2000 SP4 by the way)

What virus was it? Are you absolutely certain you have gotten rid of it? Much of the malware now drops far more on your system than what you realize. What did you do to remove the virus? You might consider posting a HJT log for us to check over, just to be sure.

I am missing my explorer key. I tried to manually add, no go.

The properties did not work (no option for run on\off)


edit: Sorry Kat, I did not see your reply.

It was a file I had received from my "friend" (or so I thought). It was not detected by Trend Micro (online scan), AVG, Spybot, AdAware or Panda (online scan). I went into safe mode and killed its process and removed it from the start-up. It also created multiple exes in the windows dir, c:\ and other places that I got rid of.

Originally it had also disabled the Task Manager and made an attempt to hijack my IE.

Rest the mouse over the ? marks in the system trap...does the tool tip reveal anything?

Not at home at the moment, I will try when I am. I think these are from spybot locking IE settings but I'm not sure (if they are easy enough to restore)

Partial success. After removal and reboot, the log off is now visible in the start menu. However...

- The log off is still grey inside the Ctrl+Alt+Delete
- The date and time still have ? marks beside
