How do I stop the pop up boxes that pop up when I move my mouse pointer over something on the screen. They can be helpful at times but, the boxes cover up things I'm trying to read.

I assume you mean in My Computer. For Internet Explorer there's probably something similar, but I don't know where it is.

Ok. So those popups are what we call "tooltips" .
To disable them in My Computer, open My computer, go into

Tools>Folder options...
Switch to the VIEW tab, and scroll to the bottom.

The last item there should be "Show popup description for folder and desktop items"

This is checked by default.

Uncheck it, and you're done.
