since the two nics have different ip addresses....then...you shouldn't be having any conflicts between them...it's jus tnot making much sense....

i no, it doesn't make much sense to me either.

the way i see it, it should have worked from the word go. but somehow it doesn't and i dunno.

any suggestions? any more information you need to re-assess the situation?

i would like to try to take the internet nic completely out of the equation and get the home network jazz taken care of first...if at all possible...though...don't know where to go on that one...i'm gonna call in the extra guns

Well, I've never setup a home computer with two NIC's, however with servers I usually assign the following protocols:

Right click My Network Places...Properties. Right click on your LAN NIC. Under the General tab, you should have the following checked:
Microsoft Client for Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
File and Printer Sharing
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Right click My Network Places...Properties. Right click on the Internet NIC. Under the General tab, you should have the following checked:
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) - nothing else

Right click My Network Places...Properties. Highlight the LAN NIC, then select Advanced --> Advanced Settings from the top menu for that window. This will check the bindings.
The LAN NIC should be displayed first, followed by the Internet NIC. If not, move the LAN NIC to the top of the list.
The LAN NIC should have File and Printer Sharing bound (checkmarked) to the TCP/IP Protocol.
The LAN NIC should have Client for Microsoft Networks bound (checkmarked) to the TCP/IP Protocol.
The Internet NIC should be bound to TCP/IP only (no other protocols or services).
However, things might be different in a home environment... I'm not sure

this was a response for dang one of our networking guys (i'm good with corporate stuff..home networking messes with my brain very badly)...the general concensus is that...using two nics in a home network will cause more pain than good...it may be easier just to go with the single nic router deall...

i did what you said in the last post, and i think we've moved ahead a bit. now instead of no LAN existing when i try to access it, i get this error:


Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is currently unavailable.



That is the error i'm getting, hopefully it is a big step forward and it's only a minor detail to get me onto the network. i don't know much about permissions, so a bit of help would be really appreciated. i dunno which permissions and where they are so.... yea

ok..you're right...that is a very nice step...from the internet/lan computer

do start> run \\<other computer name> and see what happens...if it gives you a "cannot find" or something like th at
try \\<other computer's ip address>

i tried both of them, but to no avail.

pinging from the first computer still won't work, so i'll give the network wizard another go

i ran network wizard on all of them.
still no effect, so i checked the IP address of them all.

computer 1 : 192.168.0.1
computer 2 : 169.254.178.154
computer 3 : 169.254.254.146

all are on the same workgroup

it looks like the switch has given 2 and 3 IP's but the first one doesn't match

should i give them all new static IP's?

those two ip addresses look like auto config addresses....

they were originally 10.something addresses...soooo...i'm gonna say let's give the lan static ip's...let's make the LAN all 10.something and the internet one needs to be 1.something because your router is 1.1 correct?

my internet ip is 192.168.1.2 as my router ip is 1.1

the LAN ip's are now:
computer 1: 192.168.10.1
computer 2: 192.168.10.2
computer 3: 192.168.10.3

computer 1 is still not working. pinging won't work, \\name, \\IP won't work either.

i've gotta get some sleep, but 2morrow i'm gonna check the physical connections and maybe change the port computer 1 is using on the switch.

[SEVERE WEATHER WARNING]

For some bizzare reason network wizard often fails on my network connecting through a hub to my other machine.However I have noticed if I run the network wizard THEN turn off windows firewall and then run the network wizard a SECOND time and AGAIN turn off windows firewall then restart my pc the computer connects to the network! Very odd but it has worked for me on several occasions.

I haven't been on here for quite some time, as i just used a temporary solution.

i have now run an extra cable in the roof of our house for the router to plug into. so i'll just refresh you and myself of the situation now.

i have 4 computers at home.
i have one switch in the roof.
i have one router used for internet connection.

each of the 4 computers are located in a different room, and so there is one plug on the wall in each of the room for the LAN cable to plug into. There is also 1 extra socket on the wall in 1 room for the router to plug into.

each socket goes to a port on the switch, which is located in the roof.

i use the router as a dhcp server, so it jus assigns IP addresses to each computer that connects to it.

now, here's the deal. 3 of the computers work fine and will be given an IP address and can connect to the internet. its the number 1 computer that doesn't want anything to do with it... this computer doesn't connect to the router at all and reverts to an automatic private IP address. the connection says it's connected, but i can't ping anyone on the network.

here's a few things i've tried:
1. i've made sure that the cable going from the computer to the socket, the socket on the wall, the cable going from the socket to the switch, and the port on the switch are all working. they all work fine
2. i've tried using the windows network wizard. its practically useless...
3. i've changed all IP addresses to static, and tried to get connectivity from there
4. i've tried two different working NIC's in the number 1 computer, but both show the same problem
5. i have recently purchased a new hard-drive and installed a fresh copy of windows (should eliminate software interferrence), but stilld didn't work.
6. i've connected the computer directly to the router, which does work.

it seems to me that this 1 computer is having some kind of conflict with the switch that i'm using... i don't know how, but it seems that way... if i bypass the switch, then the internet will work (still can't connect to LAN as i need to use the switch). even with the fresh install of windows sp1, it still doesn't work. so to me, it pointing to the hardware...

you've helped me before with other things, and have always come through (thx 4 that)

please please please try help me out here
