We just installed a 512 stick of ram into our computer (pc133) and for some reason it is slower! I looked at the properties and it is detecting that the ram is there, however it is not running faster at all. There is a 256 and a 512 in there which is updated from 2 sticks of 128. We should see a difference in the speed....shouldn't we? Is ther something that I am forgetting to do after installing the ram?

if the ram is compatible with your motherboard you shouldn't have a problem...plus keep in mind that ram only runs as fast as the slowest stick in the pot....so if you have one that's running at 233mhz (making up numbers here cuz i can't ever remember that stuff) one at 333 and one at like 400...all of them will run at 233

If my computer is recognizing them in the bios and under the properites, does that mean it is compatable? I took all of the others out and only put in the 512 stick and it isn't any faster. Why would someone upgrade an add a second stick if it only runs as slow as the smallest one? Does it help to upgrade at all? (233mhz is fine for an example...you're not going to get a critique from me...I am coming to you for help...ha ha).

good grief, where did this come from?

A via C3 cpu? Holy smokes, I've heard of it, but never saw it. They made these things for like, 5 minutes back in the late 90s.

This is an old motherboard and I cannot help but wonder if this is one of those rare cases where your motherboard while supporting 1 gb of ram, cannot cache that ram...what does this mean...

OK, you've got some memory built directly into your mobo, and one thing that it does is keep track of where everything is in your memory that you inserted. If the cache is too small, it cannot adequately track all that is going on, and spends a lot of time shuffling things around. Certain, this CPU was not a performance processor, but one designed for inexpensive systems..and that means the may have cheapened the whole memory cache process.

I don;t know...I cannot find enough info on this system at the moment

We bought it at Fryes but it was very cheap. We dumped linnux and loaded xp. I guess you get what you pay for....huh? What do you suggest that I do. It says that I have 3 slots for ram...but there is really 2. I have a stick of 512, 1 stick of 256, and 3 sticks of 128. should I just put the 2 128's back in? I hate to waste the 512 on this computer if it won't help it. I do have another 'real' computer that takes pc133 that I can use it in.

First, as already explained, Windows will not run faster with more RAM, it runs better. The distinction is that Windows will load more things into memory so that it can access it from quicker memory rather than hitting the harddrive.

So,I do not know if it is truly running slower, or it is not meeting your expectations. Really, you need to run a Memory Benchmark to determine if more memory is worse--it should not be that obvious--I was dealing more in the theoretical realm

Since your PC supports the extra memory, I would say that it's not bad that it is in there...Windows will always try to use all the RAM you have.

As for slowness in general, the CPU is old and outdated, the videocard is slow, your harddrive is actually a nice drive, but the controller it is going through is slowwwwwww.

That I think is a huge issue with your slowness...why it is in udma 0 mode--that is weird. Your drive supports udma 6...your motherboard, according to the manual I found, supports UDMA 4 (ata 100)

Did you isntall the ide drivers for this motherboard? The vga drivers? Or just use the Windows default driver?

http://www.ecs.com.t...nuID=35&LanID=8

Had to go to the Elitegroup Taiwan site to find the motherboard info, which is limited. But that ide driver is pretty critical
