Every time I try to access a directory tree, such as when I open Explorer, or try to save a file from a program, I get only:
+C:
+Documents and Settings
+User ID
+Start Menu

It then takes approximately 30 seconds before the rest of the C: drive directory, my second HD (D:), or other drive letters (e.g., CDROM, Network drives) show up. I have run the the suite of programs recommended by this site: Cleanup, Adaware, CWShredder, Spybot, Ewido - all in Safe Mode - and nothing in the way of viruses or malware. I have a Pentium III running XP Pro SP2, 384MB RAM, two HD - both with more than 75% free space. I have defragged both HDs, to no avail. Attached is a log of Hijack This. Does anyone have any idea how I might fix this problem? It came about very suddenly. I'm having the same problem with my laptop, a Gateway AMD64, with 1GB RAM..so I suspect it's a software thing - perhaps the result of a Windows update (which I run whenever the autoupdate downloads an update for Windows).

Thanks for helping me - even if I do have FoxNews as my home page. I did as you instructed. First ran hijack this and checked the two items to fix. Hijack this couldn't fix the error at 010. I then downloaded and ran winsockxpfix. Lastly, after system rebooted, I ran eventvwr.msc. The following errors showed up under system at the same time as my problem: Error Service Control Manager Event #7034.


By the way, I noticed that I wasn't supposed to post my Hijack This log until asked - my apologies.

I was just surfing some other topics and noticed that the topic immediately preceding mine had what appeared to be the same problem. I followed the steps in the reponse to that posting and Lo and Behold! - problem fixed. You guys are great!
