I have Firefox 3.5.2. Do I need to tweak it by using about:config and if so, how can I go about doing it?
I implemented the aforementioned tweaks in Firefox 3.5.3, and yes, you need to do it by typing 'about:config' in the address bar. You can use the filter to get to the specific lines that you're looking for.

Two things to do to speed up Firefox:
First go into Firefox, Add-ons, Extensions. If you are like most people you have multiple Java Consoles. Stupid Java doesn't seem to know how to remove them when you update. Find each Java Console which is not the latest (Check in your add/remove section of Control Panel to see which you have) and Disable it. (If you have FF 6.0.1 they may already be disabled as not compatible.) While in Extensions disable any toolbars you don't absolutely need.
Second, download and save to your desktop Speedyfox. http://www.crystalidea.com/speedyfox Close Firefox. Run Speedyfox. (Vista and Win 7 => Right click and Run As Administrator). Speed up my Firefox. Exit when done. Now try starting Firefox. Notice any difference? Keep Speedyfox on your desktop or somewhere handy and run it any time there is a change to Firefox or its extensions.

Great tips! Printing this out now and going to try tweaking it. I bounce back and forth between Chrome and FireFox... haven't decided which one I like the most. Perhaps your suggestions will push me one way or the other.
