i dont know what my dad did to his computer but when the pc reboots its slow and it stays on a black background and a white bar at the bottom for about 30min and computer runs normal after it...this happen everytime i reboot it

any help would be appreciate

Click start then run, type sfc /scannow then press enter to replace the system files, you need the XP CD.

System File Check will show an on screen blue progress bar, reboot when the bar goes

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up, then also from system tools, run disc defragmenter

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, (all files will highlight), right click any file, click delete, confirm then reboot.

Click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

hmm... my dads computer has compaq and i found these CD's ...

I would go with the operating system CD but leave it out of the drive unless it asks for one, usually it will say which CD it wants

this is the Compaq Operating System CD Microsoft Windows XP Home

is this the right cd? cauz i put it in the drive and it says

If the compaq CD goes with the image you posted, that is the XP CD

Boot the PC and let it load normally then do this

Step 1

You will need to get your XP CD and locate the folder called:

I386

This is a major folder and should be one of the first you see, now copy this onto your hard drive into the system root. For most of you that is going to be C:\ so you should end up with a folder that looks like: C:\I386

Step 2

Now you will need to tell your computer you now have the files on your PC. We do this is the registry (type regedit in the Run box on the start menu) by navigating to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries here on the right hand side. The one we want is called:

SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, and that is why it is asking for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to:

C:\

Simply double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up allowing you to make the change.

Now restart your computer and try scannow sfc again!

If it keeps asking for it put the mouse over retry and keep clicking it

If you insert the XP CD, cancels it when it shows the set up screen

Click start, my computer, right click the drive with XP CD, click explore, click i386 to highlight, click copy, you may need to press x to close the folder display so he can select copy, copy it directly to C

When you edit the registry click the + for each key then clicks set up, on the right are two similar keys, it is the 2nd of the two, source path

i think it has the different vesion because it says on the information



Possible reasons for this problem:

* You have inserted the wrong CD. (i.e., a different Windows product CD than the version installed)

Are you sure this is the CD for the PC

I386 is I386 though so you should be able to copy it from this CD

so which one? and C:\Lea (is Lea is the username of the comp)
