I want to turn a computer into a server to host a couple games. I know that you have to download things like Apache, mySQL, PHP, etc. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

Hey smoffo,

i know that you need to have your computer on 24/7. So you may just want to buy your own server. You can start here:

Welcome smoffo <_<

It's actually quite easy to set up a server. Definatley harder than installing Windows, but something an advanced user can handle with out too much trouble. Start by installing a distribution of Linux, then install Apache, etc. I've done it, but there are other forums that can probably provide much more help than we can.

Is this for use on your own network, or for access on the Internet? If it's for open access to the Internet I'd seriously reconsider. It takes some sys admin knowledge to properly configure, patch, and keep a server hacker free. Otherwise you're a sitting duck, waiting for someone to hijack your bandwidth, or use it to serve spam. Consider a hosting package instead.

No, it's going to host some games that I'm working on... as free php/mySQL hosting is hard to find. I figure this will be cheap and easier than looking through pages and pages of google searches. Yes, I'm very cheap... <_<

There's some good hosting plans that can be had for $10-$20/yr. Here's a good link to get you started:

BTW, "good and cheap" is usually an oxymoron Good and free, is about impossible to find nowadays.

Here's some more hosting companies that have good reputations--and are cheap. <_<
