It's actually quite easy to set up a server. Definatley harder than installing Windows, but something an advanced user can handle with out too much trouble. Start by installing a distribution of Linux, then install Apache, etc. I've done it, but there are other forums that can probably provide much more help than we can.
Is this for use on your own network, or for access on the Internet? If it's for open access to the Internet I'd seriously reconsider. It takes some sys admin knowledge to properly configure, patch, and keep a server hacker free. Otherwise you're a sitting duck, waiting for someone to hijack your bandwidth, or use it to serve spam. Consider a hosting package instead.

No, it's going to host some games that I'm working on... as free php/mySQL hosting is hard to find. I figure this will be cheap and easier than looking through pages and pages of google searches. Yes, I'm very cheap...
