not defragging

hi,i have recently added an old 98 pc to the home network for my son to use.The problem is i cant get it to defrag.I have cleared out a couple of trojans and a lot of spyware,went to defrag and it just wont,i know this can take some time if it hasnt been done for a while,but i left it for 12 hours,and it was still on 0%.any ideas anyone.Thanks

Try this. Do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete, and stop every process in the window that pops up except systray, and explore. Then do a defrag. If defrag still does not work well, restart your computer and get into safemode by hitting the F8 key while it is booting. It may tke you a few times trying to hit the F8 key at the right time. When you get into safe mode then do a defrag.

A couple of things to add to the above post- you could run a disk cleanup and also you should scandisk before the defrag. Also u need to have atleast 15% free space for it to do a decent job.
If its still an issue, download this and defrag, its fast and very efficient. ( the advanced scheduling features of the paid version arent there in this one though)
