Is it worth paying more for a monitor that supports 1600x1200 resolution or is 1280x1024 enough??

It all depends on what you want to do. If you use your pc for surfing the internet and general office work it's not worth the extra price, but if you are using it for high res photo and video editing 1600x1200 is worth thinking about. However you will need a powerful graphics card to process the extra information. As for gaming, almost all newer games support 1600x1200 res but again you will need a super duper graphics card. I play many games on my pc (with 1280x 1024 res) and even with an Nvidia 6600gt it does strugle somtimes. Personally I wouldn't bother.
