the shortest way I can possibly tell this story is that I have two computers, basically identical. I reformatted the HD on one, thinking that the XP CP would install proper drivers. I was wrong. I was able to find some of the drivers through searching, but I am unable to find some.

is it possible for me to take all of the drivers from one of the computers and put them on the one that doesnt have them?
also, after I reinstalled XP, whenever I turn the computer on, it wants me to choose what system to start from, offering XP twice. any ideas on how I screwed up here?

many thanks in advance for your help.

Post a list of the drivers you need and I'll see what I can find.
as for the 2 xp problem

Start/
control panel/
system/
advanced tab/
startup and recovery box hit settings tab/
up top there is a drop down box with the OS's listed choose your default/
UNCHECK the box below called time to display list of operating systems

reboot and check if it worked.

the computer now starts up nicely now, thanks.

as for the drivers, its hard to tell what ones I need because the computer just says "Base Syatem Device". There are two items with that title in the Device Manager. The location given for both are mostly the same: PCI bus 0, device 0, function 1/3 (one says "function 1" and the other 3)
also, when compared to the other computer, the USB controllers are different
I need
"Intel® 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD"
"Intel® 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2"
"Intel® 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4"
"Intel® 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7"
a quick search did not yield any results.

thanks for all the help

One good thing about Dell is they list all the drivers for all their machines on site.

The missing drivers will be in that list somewhere, you just need to download the ones you did not grab the first time through.
