I've tried to install updates to Windows XP and it fails with the following message.
ASN1 Bad Tag Met.

Can anyone tell my what this means and what I should do about it?

gonna take an absolute freaking wild shot...

c:\windows\system32\catroot

Move all the >cat files out of there into a temp folder elsewhere and try again

Hi Gerryf

I looked at \catroot and there were no cat files in it. Just two folders with long file names consisting of numbers and letters - one with a 'timestamp' file in it and a couple of .tmp files in the other one.

Does that tell you anything?
