Hi

I have been running 3 pcs on a 4 port Linksys WIRED router for ages and it has been fine.
One day for some reason i cant access 'computer C' via network places. I tried rebooting but nothing happened.

Ive run the network wizard again on all computers, but i cant see any workgroup computer from computer C and Computer C cant see any of the other computers.

Now i cant see any computer from any machine but just get the message that 'MSHOME is not accessable and to contact the administrator!!

Any help would be most appreciated!!

Thank you!

PS . How do you 'ping' another computer?????????????

Sorry for the double post, but it seems nobody is able to help.

Does anyone know if it is possible to just reset all network connections and start again :tazz:

Hi cheekydollar,

The fact that this problem seems to be getting worse and worse would suggest to me that it may be some sort of infection on your network (ie: a worm), that is interfering with Network Connectivity. For this reason, I would suggest following all of the steps located here. Once done, you may also need to post a HJT log here.

PS . How do you 'ping' another computer?????????????

Well, first you need to find the other computers IP Address (or alternately you can ping by name). Goto Start --> Run --> Type cmd and press OK --> type ipconfig and press enter --> look for the IP Address. Write it down.

Now on a different computer, goto Start --> Run --> type CMD and press OK --> type ping [IP Address] where IP Address is the address you wrote down earlier. eg. ping 192.168.0.101 -- please let me know if you can ping each computer.

If you do not think that you're infected, then try restarting all of your computers into Safe Mode with Networking, and then try to connect to each computer -- are you able to?

Hi
Sorry, yes i ran all pcs in safe mode w/networking but no change. Ive also run adaware + pandascan on all machines - picked up a few insignifanct things but no luck.

By the way i have been able to ping each machine from each other by IP but not by name.

By the way i have been able to ping each machine from each other by IP but not by name.

On any of the computers which are experiencing connectivity issues, do the following:
Start --> Run --> type CMD --> press OK. Now type:
  • ipconfig /flushdns -- wait for for it to finish; then
  • ipconfig /registerdns -- once completed, try to ping/connect to the other computers.
If you're still unable to connect, please goto Start --> Run --> type CMD and press OK --> Now type: nbtstat -c -- please copy/paste the results by right-clicking on the Command Prompt window, selecting 'Select All', pressing the Enter key, and then posting on this forum.

Also -- Start --> Run --> type CMD and press OK --> Now type: net view -- please copy/paste the results by right-clicking on the Command Prompt window, selecting 'Select All', pressing the Enter key, and then posting on this forum.

Thanks,
Dan.

Basic Checklist for Networking
1. Ensure that all firewalls are disabled for all computers involved.
2. Ensure that all computers on the network are in the same workgroup.
3. Ensure each computer has File and Printer Sharing installed.
4. Ensure that you have File Sharing enabled - to do this, right-click on any Drive or Folder on one (or all) of the computers, and select Sharing and Security.... Ensure that Share this folder on the Network is enabled.

What happens when you goto Start --> Run and then type: \\[COMPUTER_NAME] -- ie: \\DANIEL

When I type Net view it says: System error 6118 has occured!!!

Please restart two computers into Safe Mode with Networking again, and then try to share files between the two again. I have a feeling that this error is being caused by an incorrectly configured firewall (Windows Firewall?).

BTW: I managed to ping the computer I am using by name.... but i guess that should obviously happen

Yes, this is a good thing. What did you change to (re)gain access to the other computer(s) by name?

Hi
1)I have checked everything on the checklist - i can tick them all off!
2) when I goto Start --> Run and then type: \\[COMPUTER_NAME] -- ie: \\DANIEL it says that the network path was not found.
3) All my windows firewalls are turned off, and always have been.
4) I am using computer 'joes' and i typed ping joes from 'joes' and it worked, but if i type 'ping davids' it says it cannot find the host...

The weird thing is that everything was working ok then one day for some reason it just stopped working out of the blue....

Oh i didnt mention..... that computer 'davids' is running Zonealarms firewall and antivirus, but the firewall has been on medium and never caused any problem, and i have turned it off to run there tests. Anyway, i still cant see the other computer which isnt running any firewall.

Hi

I just tried running the machines in safe mode but still get the same error.

I also tried to ping 'davids' in safe mode but with no luck.
Actually in safe mode i cant even seem to ping succesfully using the IP address. Just says timed out.

In safe mode When i go to run --> \\davids it says 'NO network provider accepted the given path.

Man this isnt looking good :tazz:

On both computers, please goto Start, Run, type CMD, press 'OK' and then type: IPCONFIG /ALL - please post the results here by right-clicking on the Command Prompt window, selecting 'Select All', pressing the Enter key, and then posting on this forum. Alternately, you can save your information to a text file by using the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL > C:\ipconfig.txt -- navigate to that text file, and copy/paste the information from it.

For troubleshooting purposes, please give full access to your Shared Drive/Folder (on both computers)--
Please goto Start --> Run --> Type CMD and press OK --> Now, please do the following -- *Note: Replace D:\ with the path to your shared Drive/Folder.
cacls D:\ /g everyone:f -- NOTE: There is a space between the \ and / along with a space between the g and everyone -- there is no space between the everyone, : and f
Once done, try to connect to each computer from the other -- are you able to?

Please download LSPFix from here. Run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading, and please list all of the protocols that are in the 'Keep' and 'Remove' list; if there are protocols in the 'Remove' list, then please don't click 'Finish>>'. Simply close the program by pressing ALT+F4 or the Close [x] button.
