likely damaged boot sector...grab your windows xp cd, drop into the recovery console and type

chkdsk /r
<enter>

let it run

reboot
No work?

recovery console again, this time

fixmbr \Device\HardDisk0
<enter>

let it run
reboot
No work?

back to recovery console
type
fixboot c: (assuming your system drive where you loaded windows xp was c:)
<enter>
