One system I take care of is set with all the family members as limited users, so as to minimize problems they, and malware, can cause. However, it requires the Admin user to update the definitions file. If a limited user tries, it *says* it succeeds in downloading the update, but then silently fails to actually update.

I tried changing the folder that holds the reference file to the Shared Files folder, but Ad-Aware doesn't remember it between sessions. Even when I do it all manually, a limited user can save the refs.def file. Any clues?

As it is free and small, use add remove to uninstall it, click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, right click any file, click delete, confirm then reboot. Download the latest version and check for the option to make available for all users during the install
