Well I have a switch which is connected to my DSL modem and 2 of my computers and while I can use the internet on the 2 computers at the same time I can’t share files (I have run the networking set up wizard many times and it says I am on the same work group). One of the computers is running XP pro and the other XP home. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi dhamal,
Basic Checklist for Networking
1. Ensure that all firewalls are disabled for all computers involved.
2. Ensure that all computers on the network are in the same workgroup.
3. Ensure each computer has File and Printer Sharing installed.
4. Ensure that you have File Sharing enabled - to do this, right-click on any Drive or Folder on one (or all) of the computers, and select Sharing and Security.... Ensure that Share this folder on the Network is enabled.

Please confirm that you have followed all of these steps, then we can continue.
Thanks,
Dan.

On both computers, please goto Start, Run, type CMD, press 'OK' and then type: IPCONFIG /ALL - please post the results here by right-clicking on the Command Prompt window, selecting 'Select All', pressing the Enter key, and then posting on this forum. Alternately, you can save your information to a text file by using the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL > C:\ipconfig.txt -- navigate to that text file, and copy/paste the information from it.

If you're uncomfortable with posting your IP on the public forum, could you please PM this information to me. There's really nothing I can do with it, as in most cases it will simply be your internal IP, rather than your external IP. It would help alot if I could see this information.

Okay, I know you said you've run the network setup wizard before, but did you run it with these steps:
Run the Network Setup Wizard:
  • Goto Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> Communications --> Network Setup Wizard.
  • The first thing to do when the wizard appears is read the welcome message, and then click Next.
  • Read the 'Before you continue....' message, and then click Next.
  • Select the option This computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway or another computer on my network, and then press Next.
  • Now, type in a Description for your computer; ie: Jimmy's Computer.
  • Enter a Computer Name (or leave it as it's Default), and then press Next.
  • Enter a Workgroup Name -- or leave it as it's default, and then press Next.
  • If you want to share files and/or your printer with other computers on the network, select the option Turn on file and printer sharing and press Next.
  • Check the information; if it is all fine, press Next.
  • Now, if possible, you should Create a Network Setup Disk -- once you have created a Network Setup Disk, insert it into any other computer on your network, and run it; follow all prompts.
