I am getting the error message on bootup and shutdown about winlogon.exe

On bootup I get winlogon has encountered a problem

on shutdown I get a fatal error message, the blue screen, and windows logon terminated unexpectedly

WinLogon.exe is a required process in Windows XP...winlogon.exe is possible malware. The quickest way to find out which it is is to do a search for the file (Click Start > Search...search hidden files, system files, and subfolders). The one you need is in the System32 folder. If the search finds this file in any other location, you will need to head for the Malware Forum to clean your machine up. Let us know what you find.

there are six winlogon.exe files on my computer:
one in system 32, one in c:\1386, three with long numbers after winlogon.exe, two in a 'prefetch' directory, one in a pchealth file

actually two winlogn.exe files are in a pchealth folder, with user dump as a subfolder

why so many?

The file in System32 is normal...The one in i386 is normal. There may be copies of this file in Service Pack files, as well...also normal.

Go to System Restore and create a restore point.

Click Start, then Run, type prefetch, and click "Ok". Find the two copies of winlogon.exe and delete them.

Click Start, then Run, type pchealth, and click "Ok". Find the copies of winlogon.exe and delete them.

Reboot your machine...any change?

The HJT log looks good. I think you may have been loading a corrupt copy of the file from prefetch...keep your eye on it and let me know if the issue has been resolved.
