Since I have had some issues with MS WORD also and saw the solution to detect and repair on another person's inquiry, I did this, too.
QUESTION - do I now need to redo UPDATES??? I am never confident that I haven't wiped out those things when having to put the CD in from the original installation. Does it literally take it back to that point?

i''m not 100% sure on this one...but i don't think it removes any of the office updates...i think it just makes sure all the office files are working properly

It has never done anything to mine but, to be on the safe side, I have always went back to the Windows Update site and let it double check !!

a damaged file will be replaced by the original file, so yes, you should to updates following an office repair.

The default Office install now hides the installation files in a hidden folder, which is why you no longer need the CD for repairs. If all that was done was a repair to registry settings, then you would not need to update, but Office does not indicate what was repaired, so I would update.
