I have been working with retrac and schewerv and they have tried all kinds of things to get me online. We uninstalled mcfee and tried to ping google no luck.I have some log info from hijackthis at
http://www.geekstogo...71

They told me to post here.I have 2 computers one on a wireless connection and other wire hookup. But both going through the router.I have unhooked the wired one and hooked it directly up to the cable modem. No server still. The wireless one works fine.I talk to a guy at a computer shop and he said I had a browser hijack and the bridge was broken and need to be fixed.

All the help i have got from this site is awsome and anymore would be much needed

<mikejoz> i have mcfee anti viris and it deleted 2 files from my computer witch caused my computer to not be able to get on the net
<mikejoz> can't find server
<mikejoz> and need some help putting it bake
<mikejoz> back
<ScHwErV> mikejoz google for winsockfix
<mikejoz> did that
<mikejoz> did hijacker
<ScHwErV> hijacker?
<mikejoz> thats what a guy last night said do
<mikejoz> he said i had a browser hijack
<ScHwErV> you mean hijackthis?
<mikejoz> yes sorry
<ScHwErV> well unless you know what you are looking for.. HJT wont do you much good
<mikejoz> i posted logs and he read them
<ScHwErV> you remember who it was?
<mikejoz> retrac
<mikejoz> we worked on it untill late
<mikejoz> tried everything
<ScHwErV> what is siber systems?
<mikejoz> he told me to check in here today see if any good ideas
<mikejoz> got me
<ScHwErV> RoboFormComPasswordGenerator
<mikejoz> thats where all my important sites are for easy access
<ScHwErV> consumer input?
<mikejoz> its a survey company
<ScHwErV> you still have your mcafee cd?
<mikejoz> no i get it from comcast on line
<ScHwErV> can you re-get it if I ask you to uninstall it?
<ScHwErV> or better yet.. if you get it for free.. i can suggest a better alternative
<mikejoz> yes if i can get online
<mikejoz> i get it from comcast not the free one
<ScHwErV> ok then.. thats where I'd start if I were you
<mikejoz> but i don't pay for it
<mikejoz> comes with the service
<ScHwErV> ive solved many computer problems by uninstalling mcafee
<ScHwErV> and norton
<mikejoz> ok so uninstall mcfee
<ScHwErV> in safe mode
<mikejoz> ok
<mikejoz> ill do it now
<mikejoz> brb
<ScHwErV> he also has the windows ME infection
<sari> lol
<therock247uk> lol
<ScHwErV> right therock247uk
<SnowPunk> haha
<therock247uk> well it worked fine for me... i have no clue what people did to it...
<ScHwErV> its like norton... you dont have to do anything to it.. it breaks all on its own
<mikejoz> Hi, ScHwErV this is mike's wife, mike is uninstalling mcafee,
<mikejoz> right now
<mikejoz> my friend told me that someone hijack my browser, that is why I can't get on line
<ScHwErV> it appears that retrac removed the egaccessdialer last night
<ScHwErV> so yes
<Mikester> does Mcaffe do much? like in find problems?
<ScHwErV> eh.. sometimes
<mikejoz> ok
<ScHwErV> its not a horrible antivirus..
<mikejoz> its gone now
<ScHwErV> its just that it tries to do too much
<mikejoz> mcfee
<ScHwErV> it thinks its smarter than it actually is
<ScHwErV> reboot and see if your net connection works
<Mikester> yeah I had a friend download HJT it it fept saying a worm
<Mikester> because it was from merlin
<Mikester> whic jeff told me
<ScHwErV> Merijn
<Mikester> yeah
<mikejoz> i did no luck\
<mikejoz> i went to networking
<ScHwErV> its an error.. mcafee thinks that just because its UPX packed then it has to be bad.. except there are a ton of good programs out there that are packed with UPX
<mikejoz> and my tcp/ip has no card behind it
<Mikester> oo I see
<mikejoz> usually after tcp/ip your card is there
<mikejoz> mine is above it
<mikejoz> so no network connected to pc card when i double click the card
<mikejoz> its connected to tcp/ip
<ScHwErV> umm.. wait.. where are you again?
<ScHwErV> not physically
<ScHwErV> on the computer
<ScHwErV> what are you looking at
<mikejoz> in network
<mikejoz> control panel
<ScHwErV> ok
<ScHwErV> and you see the network connection
<mikejoz> under tcp/ip
<mikejoz> right
<mikejoz> but no pc card hook to the tcp
<ScHwErV> you cant hook a pc card to the tcp
<mikejoz> how
<ScHwErV> how?
<ScHwErV> tcp/ip is a protocol.. you cant hook a card to it.. no matter how hard you try
<mikejoz> i see the pc card then scroll down to the tcp
<ScHwErV> ok
<ScHwErV> try this
<mikejoz> ok
<ScHwErV> start - run - command
<ScHwErV> then type ipconfig /all
<ScHwErV> and tell me what is under ip address
<mikejoz> ok
<ScHwErV> oh.. and how many connections it sees also
<mikejoz> it came up a little black screen and disapeard very quick
<mikejoz> couldn't see
<mikejoz> so fast
<ScHwErV> umm
<ScHwErV> you didnt type command in the run box
<ScHwErV> that will open a command window
<mikejoz> no i typed ipconfig /all
<mikejoz> so do that first
<ScHwErV> yes.. type command first
<ScHwErV> then type ipconfig /all in the command window
<mikejoz> ok done
<mikejoz> ip address is there
<mikejoz> dns
<mikejoz> 192.168.2.101 is the ip
<ScHwErV> what is the gateway
<mikejoz> 192.168.2.1
<ScHwErV> odd
<ScHwErV> type this
<mikejoz> ok
<ScHwErV> ping 192.168.2.1
<ScHwErV> tell me what it says
<ScHwErV> should ping 4 times..
<ScHwErV> you can just tell me wether it timed out or not
<ScHwErV> i gotta go for a meeting in 5 mins.. so hopefully well get this done quick or someone can take over for me
<mikejoz> gave me 4 replys
<ScHwErV> hrmm
<ScHwErV> but you cant get on the internet
<ScHwErV> ?
<ScHwErV> type ping www.google.com
<ScHwErV> and see if it gets out
<mikejoz> i tried to ping yahoo and no answere
<mikejoz> ok
<Avohir> try just the IP
<Avohir> 74.14.207.99
<mikejoz> ok
<mikejoz> said request timed out
<Avohir> not a dns issue...
<ScHwErV> i dont think its your computer
<ScHwErV> well
<ScHwErV> what computer are you on now?
<mikejoz> the wireless one
<ScHwErV> ok
<ScHwErV> hooked to the same router?
<mikejoz> yep itried to hook direct and same thing
<ScHwErV> you tried to hook the laptop you are on now to the router with a cable and it didnt work?
<mikejoz> not a laptopb just wireless
<ScHwErV> ok
<mikejoz> we have 2 computers
<mikejoz> one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom
<ScHwErV> did you try to hook the computer you are on now to the router via the wired connection?
<mikejoz> yes
<ScHwErV> and did it work?
<mikejoz> no
<ScHwErV> ok then.. we can stop messing with the computer.. youve got a router problem
<ScHwErV> and I am out of time
<ScHwErV> we have a networking forum
<mikejoz> ok,thanks
<ScHwErV> http://www.geekstogo...orking-f11.html
<ScHwErV> post your problem there
<ScHwErV> include in your post the things that we went over here
<mikejoz> ok thanks a lot
<ScHwErV> and tell them about both computers
<mikejoz> ok
<ScHwErV> bbiab
* ScHwErV is away: meeting
<mikejoz> one computer works and the other one does not work
<mikejoz> i hooked the bad computer up directly to the cable modem and it dosn't work still
<mikejoz> so a router problem isn't it
<mikejoz> i think
<mikejoz> hi sari
<mikejoz> hey rock
<sari> hi mikejoz
<therock247uk> hello
<mikejoz> any net tecs here
<sari> I know a little
<mikejoz> just tring to get my computer to get on the net
<mikejoz> can't find server
<mikejoz> it says
<mikejoz> my wireless works fine
<sari> you have 2 pcs, right?
<sari> one works and one doesn't?
<mikejoz> retrac and scherv have tried everything
<mikejoz> yes
<sari> the one that works - is it wireless or wired?
<mikejoz> wireless works
<sari> so the wired one doesn't? sorry for the questions, but I wasn't here for all of the previous discussion
<mikejoz> right
<sari> they go through the same router, though, right?
<mikejoz> yes
<mikejoz> tried to hook it up direct no luck
<sari> have you compared the network config on both?
<mikejoz> maybe not compared
<mikejoz> i was running mcfee and thats when it happ
<sari> ok, first do the start > run > command > ipconfig on them both
<mikejoz> ok
<sari> check gateway, etc
<mikejoz> on one that works ip is 192.168.2.102 default gatway 192.168.2.1
<mikejoz> one that dosn't work ip 192.168.2.101 gatway 192.168.2.1
<sari> you can't ping the gateway, right?
<mikejoz> how do i do it
<mikejoz> ping gateway
<sari> ping 192.168.2.1
<sari> in your command window
<mikejoz> like ping google
<sari> ping the ip address
<mikejoz> yes it works
<mikejoz> for ip
<mikejoz> not for google ip
<sari> right
<sari> so you can get to the router
<mikejoz> is that what pinging the ip is
<sari> yes - it's to tell me whether that pc can see the router
<sari> so it can, but it can't see the network beyond
<sari> like google
<mikejoz> yep
<sari> do you have a firewall on there?
<mikejoz> no
<sari> it seems odd that you can get to the router, but not beyond it
<sari> you don't know what mcafee deleted?
<mikejoz> no just said it deleted it and didn't give us a chance to reject
<mikejoz> was in the clean prosses

Thanks for posting the chat log, "schewerv" -- everyone spells your name wrong :) :tazz:

Hi mikejoz,

.I talk to a guy at a computer shop and he said I had a browser hijack and the bridge was broken and need to be fixed.

By "bridge" I assume he was referring to your Layered Service Provider (LSP), and yes this is quite possible. Please download LSPFix from here. Run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading, and please list all of the protocols that are in the 'Keep' and 'Remove' list; if there are protocols in the 'Remove' list, then please don't click 'Finish>>'. Simply close the program by pressing ALT+F4 or the Close [x] button.

Thanks,
Dan.

To reinstall Winsock2 in Windows 98/ME:

Note: You will need to have access to your Windows 98 installation CD and the network card drivers install CD or floppy.

CAUTION: Please edit or modify the registry with extreme caution; removing an incorrect key or value from the registry can cause serious problems with your computer's Windows Operating System. Be sure to make a backup copy of your registry prior to making any changes. Perform this procedure at your own risk.

1. Right-click Network Neighborhood.
2. Select Properties.
3. Highlight the offending network card. Click Remove.
4. Remove the TCP/IP protocol from the card if it does not disappear with the network card entry. Click Ok. Do NOT reboot yet.
5. Right-click My Computer and select Properties > Hardware > Device Manager.
6. Verify that the network card is gone. Do NOT reboot yet.
7. Click Start>> Run. Type in: regedit [Enter].
8. Navigate to the key HKLM\System\Current Control Set\Services\VXD
9. Delete both the WINSOCK entry and WINSOCK2 entry.
10. Navigate to the key HKLM\System\Current Control Set\Services.
11. Delete the WINSOCK and WINSOCK2 entries there as well.
12. Exit regedit and reboot the system.

On reboot, Windows will find the network card again. Reinstall the driver and Windows files when requested.

Mike, please confirm that the computer experiencing problems is Windows 95, 98SE or ME. If so, please use this winsock fix application which is specific to these operating systems (DO NOT RUN THIS IF THE COMPUTER DOES NOT USE WINDOWS 95, 98SE OR ME!!)
  • Download w2fix.exe and transfer it to the problematic computer -- do not try to run this application from a floppy disk / usb chip etc -- you must actually copy this file to the problematic computers Desktop. It is actually important that this file is on the Desktop, I am not stressing it for fun :tazz:
  • [Before running this application, please shut-down all other programs]Double click on the w2fix file on your Desktop and follow the on-screen instructions. You will be prompted to reboot your computer twice before the fix is complete.
  • You can delete the w2fix.exe file from your computer after the fix is installed.
Can you now connect to the Internet -- if not, please run LSPFix.exe again, and follow my aforementioned instructions.

Thanks,
Dan.
